The Lady Tigers drop their opening match in the MSC Tournament to Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The third-seeded Campbellsville University women's soccer team were downed from the Mid-South Conference Tournament in a shutout by the sixth-seeded University of the Cumberlands Patriots Friday night: 3-0.

It was an early initial score by Cumberlands when they struck the net stemming from disshevled Tiger defense in the 4th minute. In response, Jenna Croteau, returning from injury, took the reigns attempting the first CU shot of the night in the 7th minute but it was high. Not long after that, Croteau would get fouled just outside of the box and try for a goal on a free kick but the ball was saved. The Patriots would net their second score of the night in the 18th minute and the Lady Tigers found themselves down 2-0 in early goings.

Just a minute later, Lina Berrah launched a ball toward the goal but it was saved. Campbellsville was caught overextending their offense and faced pressure from Cumberlands. Riley Thompson would record two saves while Lauren Woodcock and Chloe Holt both blocked shots of their own. Two headers would come from the Lady Tigers just before the half: one by Sangmin Cha saved and one by Croteau wide right.

At the intermission, the scoreboard was in the Patriots' favor but they had only taken two more shots than Campbellsville (seven to five) with five of those being on goal against the Lady Tigers' three. The keepers for both squads had three saves each.

The second half saw about nearly the same amount of shots as the first. Cumberlands came out of the gate blasting with three attempts in the first seven minutes. Sydney Martin would get a look in the 55th minute but the ball hung right. Increasingly physical play didn't stop the shots from coming either. In the 59th minute, Cumberlands hit the crossbar, the rebound attempt was blocked, and then, barely a minute later, Thompson made an extended single-handed save. Olja Ivanovich had two chances just after that but one was blocked and the other was wide.

In the 80th minute, the Patriots put the ball in the net for their third score of the night. The last ten minutes saw Woodcock with a shot that missed and an Erin Riden attempt that was saved. When the game ended, both keepers went home with four saves. Seven shots were on goal for Cumberlands while the Lady Tigers posted four.

The Campbellsville University Lady Tigers will now await the finish of the Mid-South Conference Tournament for a qualifying opportunity to the NAIA National Tournament.
