CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers faced-off against Bethel University in an afternoon Mid-South match-up on Saturday night. The Tigers walked out of Powell Athletic Center with a win and a record of 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-South Conference.
Campbellsville was looking to make their win streak three games as they competed against Bethel. The starters for the Tigers included
Peyton Broughton,
Cameron Carmical,
Darius Harding,
Jarius Key, and
Jace Wallace.
To start the first half, the Wildcats won possession and advanced the ball to their side of the court. Bethel was first to put points up with a layup. Harding evened the score with a jump shot. Both teams worked simultaneously to scratch at each other's lead. The scoreboard stood at 12-10 with 9:43 left on the clock. Key went to the paint with back-to-back layups to make the score 16-10 over the Wildcats. Bethel was able to shorten the gap between them and the Tigers due to the Tigers faltering on vital free throws. The Tigers ended the half with a 55.5 percent at the charity line. The half ended with Campbellsville earning a nine-point lead with a score of 33-24.
The Tigers went into the half with more than a ten-percent better field goal percentage than Bethel. Campbellsville earned a 43.3 percent over that of Bethel's 32.3 percent. Key racked up 11 points to enter the half as Harding followed with eight. Broughton was sprightly under the basket as he totaled six rebounds.
Bethel put points on the board first in the second half of play. On defense Bethel resorted to a full-court press. Broughton was first to score for Campbellsville with a layup. The Wildcats were able to whittle at Campbellsville's lead causing them to only trail by one point with a score of 38-37. The Tigers had to work with vigor to get past Wildcat defenders. Campbellsville lost their lead as Bethel tied up the score at 40-40. Bethel took the lead by one point at 43-42, their first lead since 5-2 in the first half. Bethel took another lead at 50-48 when shooting 2-2 at the free throw line.
Malachi De Sousa was an asset as he went a five-point run with a layup and three-pointer putting Campbellsville up at 54-52.
Sam Weining made two free throws paired with a three from Carmical. While Bethel remained unable to advance their score, Wallace drew a foul as he made a layup. His and-one added three to the Tiger score of 62-54. Another layup by Wallace pushed the Tigers to a 64-56 lead. After a pair of fouls, De Sousa and Weining each went 2-2 at the line. The Wildcats were able to covert free throw opportunities of their own into points to only trail 68-66 with two minutes remaining. Wallace returned to the free throw line and made both to take the score to 70-66. A pair of points were earned at the charity line by
Keaston Brown and the game ended with a score of 72-68.
Campbellsville's point leaders included De Sousa (15), Harding (14), Wallace (12), and Key (12). Weining and Broughton both earned seven rebounds on the day while De Sousa and Wallace followed with six. Carmical and Brown totaled four assists each.
The Tigers will travel to Cumberland University on December 16
th. The Mid-South match will begin at 9 p.m. ET.
