Home runs by Whitney and Blades lead Lady Tigers to doubleheader split on Opening Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. — A tough loss in game one sparked a fire in the offense in game two as No. 11 Campbellsville University softball split with No. 25 Webber International University to start the season.

The Lady Tigers (1-1) were led by Payton Blades, Tori Humphrey and Riley Hurst all finished the doubleheader with two hits each. Blades blasted the first home run of the season in the fifth inning of game two – which was followed by a two-run homer by Ryley Whitney to spark a big inning.

In the circle, Karson Williams (1-0) shined at moments in game two but fell victim to a few two-strike-count hits and two-out hits. Overall, she tossed five innings allowed two earned runs while striking out three to earn the victory.

Katy Chadwell came into relief in both games and showed promise as well. In game one, she relieved Blades in the circle during the fifth inning and struck out two while allowing only one hit. In game two, Chadwell went 1.2 innings allowed two runs but striking out two.

Game one: Webber International 3, Campbellsville 1

Blades allowed a lead-off triple to begin the season and the run came around to score on a one-out RBI by Victoria Atkinson.

The Lady Tigers answered in the second inning as Lexi Miller showed patience for a two-out walk and was followed with a RBI double by Riley Hurst to tie it at one.

Blades sat down eight of the next nine batters until a two-out hit-by-pitch and error in the fourth inning – but neither came around to score.

In the fifth, two singles in a row forced Coach Wathen to pull Blades from the circle and Chadwell entered. A sac fly to right field and another CU error allowed both runs to score.

After trailing 3-1, the Lady Tigers had a chance in the seventh. A leadoff double by Humphrey was followed with a one-out line-out by Miller that sent the Warrior center fielder to the fence. CU couldn't muster anymore offense after that loud out.

Kayla Swinson (2-0) pitched her second consecutive complete-game for Webber International tossing seven innings of two hit softball.

Game two: Campbellsville 9, Webber International 6

The offense came alive in game two but it took a few three-run frames to overcome three more errors defensively. Webber International picked up another leadoff extra base hit by Maggard that came around to score putting CU behind, 1-0.

CU's offensive came alive in the third after a leadoff walk by Bowling and sac bunt by Hannah Judd moved her to second base. Blades followed with a single and Aldridge walked to setup a two RBI single by Ryleigh Oldham

Leading 3-1 after three innings, CU extended its lead to 6-1 after a solo home run by Blades and two-run blast by Whitney.

Webber followed suite with runs in the fifth and sixth innings off Anna Wantz and Chadwell but CU answered with insurance runs in the seventh. Humphrey delivered an RBI single and Hurst followed with a two-RBI hit.

Emily Maitland (1-1) earned the loss in the circle lasting only 4.2 innings and six runs.
