CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their second-straight Saturday doubleheader, the Campbellsville University men's volleyball team earned their fourth-straight sweep victory as they defeated Carlow University and Thomas More University at Gosser Gymnasium.
Both Carlow and Thomas More are both in the early part of their season as Carlow played in their first match of the season and Thomas More in their second and third against Carlow and Campbellsville. Not only were the Celtics playing their first match of the season against the Tigers, but it was also the first match for their program as they are in their inaugural season.
The Tigers used a majority of their roster, especially the freshman, against Carlow as Campbellsville was able to take the match by set scores of 25-7, 25-15, 25-15. As a team, Campbellsville finished with 28 total kills as a team on 58 attacks with only 10 errors for a .310 attack percentage.
Individually,
Andres Laboy finished with the team lead in kills with seven in the match with
Mason McKinney (5),
Nils Kleinschmidt (4),
Elijah Miller (3),
Jakob Zum Kolk (3),
Max Stotridge (3),
Jason Camacho (2), and
Jay Montalvo (1) all getting on the stat sheet on the offensive side.
Campbellsville was strong on the service side finishing with 13 aces as
Jeremy Hernandez,
Jose Viera Cerame, and Kleinschmidt all had three with
Gehrig Mickels adding two, as Laboy and Camacho each finishing with one. After Hernandez handled the setting duties for Campbellsville for about a half of a set, freshman
Brent Knight took over to finish as the Tigers' leader in assists with 20.
Russ Cyprowski for the Celtics was the overall leader in kills in the match with nine on 25 total attacks as he was the main outside threat for the first-year program. Coulter Chaffee and Hunter DeStefano both had two kills as Chaffee finished with 12 assists as the team's setter.
Against Thomas More, CU was stronger offensively playing a majority of their main rotation as they finished with 36 kills to just 21 for the Saints as the hitting percentage went .333 to .049 for the Tigers.
Isaac Paches led the way for Campbellsville with nine kills with Stotridge (7), Camacho (5),
Ramon Matos (5),
Ho Yin Leung (4),
Noah Henkel (3),
Ryan Smith (2), and Zum Kolk (1) all getting on the board as well. It was a bit of a standout match for Stotridge as it seemed like any time the Tigers needed a point, either Smith or Hernandez would set up the senior and he would deliver a kill more often than not with his .417 hitting percentage.
The Tigers were able to pull away from the Saints in each of the first two sets but it was a tight set in the third at as TMU pulled to within a point at 18-17. CU ended the match on a 7-0 run behind rotation errors from the Saints that seemed to throw them out of sorts.
CU assistant coach
Manny Panchame earned the Tigers some points in that match as he pointed the rotation issue out to the officials that eventually led to at least three Campbellsville points throughout the entirety of the match.
Campbellsville men's volleyball won't play against until next Saturday when they have another doubleheader day of matches when they face Milligan University and Bluefield College in a pair of matches hosted at Bluefield.
