PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Looking for regular season revenge, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team dropped a hard fought 84-74 loss to University of Pikeville Tuesday night on the road in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The Tigers hung around throughout most of the game and even led at multiple times during the second half despite trailing by as many as 16 twice in the opening five minutes of the game. After UPike led 22-6, Campbellsville went on a 22-0 run over a stretch of 6:53 to take a 28-22 lead before Pikeville's offensive picked back up as they led by two points at halftime.
Despite the strong effort from the Tigers to hang in that game, the Bears were able to run away with the 10-point victory by hitting most of their free throws late in the contest as CU kept it within three with as much as 2:23 left in the game.
Taiveyhon Mason led all scorers with 23 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field as he added five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a blocked shot in 35 minutes on the floor. He was backed up by 16 points from
Max Reyes off the bench along with 11 apiece from both
Alston Davis and
Jay'von Jackson as that trio combined for all six of the team's made three-point baskets.
Pikeville had five players score in double figures led by the 20 from Jacob Brown as he went 5-of-8 from the field and knocked down nine of his 10 free throw attempts in the game. Korbin Spencer (19), Jamir Simpson (15), Malcolm Green (10), and Darius Love (10) all added double figures from the starting lineup with Simpson adding a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.
CU's season will come to a close with this loss as they finish the 2020-21 season 9-16 overall.
