Lady Tigers breeze past Brescia with pair of run-rule victories

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – On a windy day in Campbellsville, the Campbellsville University softball team picked up a pair of comfortable victories in a doubleheader over Brescia Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers combined to score 20 runs over the 10 innings played as they won both games after holding eight-run leads through five innings to force run-rule stoppages. Game one's score finished at 12-4 with game two finishing at an 8-0 shutout victory.

Two different big innings in the two games really carried CU over the top as a six-run second inning helped the Lady Tigers run away in the 12-4 game one and a seven-run first inning in game two got Campbellsville started on the right foot.

It was an overall impressive day at the plate for leadoff hitter Riley Hurst as the shortstop went a combined 6-for-8 driving in four runs and scoring three herself in the two games combined.

Catcher Ryley Whitney was a primary run producer for the Lady Tigers as she had a two-RBI double in the first inning of both games and finished the day 4-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored.

Though the wind was blowing out pretty hard at Hord Softball Field on Wednesday, only one home run was hit over the 10 innings and that was a two-run blast to center field by Hannah Judd in game one for her only hit on the day.

With their large lead in game one, head coach Shannon Wathen saw an opportunity to get at bats for numerous players off of her bench as Sam McKee, Madison Davis, Bailey Richardson, Taylor Windell, Morgan Carter, and Hadley Carter all saw plate appearances on the day.

In the circle, Katy Chadwell and Courtney Patterson pitched well in game one despite giving up four runs. Only one of the four runs was earned as the duo combined to only allow two hits over five innings and strikeout four batters.

Karson Williams and Payton Blades shared pitching duties in the second game as they combined for the shutout while allowing three hits as Williams picked up the only walks and strikeouts in that game with three apiece.

Campbellsville will get back to Mid-South Conference play this weekend when they start a six-game road trip with a four-game series in McKenzie, Tenn. when they face Bethel University this Friday and Saturday.
