Tigers’ timely hitting and effective pitching leads to series opening wins over Martin Methodist

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Earning their first Mid-South Conference victories since Feb. 25, the Campbellsville University baseball team picked up a pair of wins in Thursday's doubleheader against Martin Methodist College.

Game one saw another outstanding performance from starting pitcher Aaron Hutchinson to lead CU to a 3-1 win while the Tigers were able to pick up the offense a bit in game two to a 7-3 victory in the seven-inning contest.

Hutchinson final line was six hits and one earned run while striking out a career-high 10 batters in his second-straight start of eight innings of work. Trestyn DuMilieu returned to a familiar role out of the bullpen after trying his hand as a starter last weekend and picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The game was scoreless halfway through before CU broke through with a Noah Amenta two-out RBI single to centerfield. That came after the Tigers had a runner thrown out at the plate on a single from Tyler Cox but there was no harm as Amenta delivered two batters later.

MMC starter Dakota Crowell walked the next batter then was replaced by Drew Bailey, who walked a batter himself with the bases loaded to force home a run, putting Campbellsville up 2-0.

The Tigers would tack on another run in the seventh inning with some help from a Bailey wild pitch and the Redhawks would get to Hutchinson in the top of the eighth but the two in the fifth was enough for CU to earn the game one win.

Martin Methodist scored the game's opening run in the second inning of game two against starter Zack Bromstead but Campbellsville was able to answer right back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs.

In that bottom of the second inning, the Tigers bunted three times as the Redhawks also made two throwing errors to help Campbellsville push those three runs across. Campbellsville was able to extend their lead in the third inning with an Eddy Arteaga two-RBI single to left to make it 5-1.

Outside of the second inning run he allowed, Bromstead was able to pitch a strong four innings of work allowing only five hits and striking out eight batters to pick up his first win of the season. Kam Robertson pitched two innings out of the bullpen to allow the other two runs Martin Methodist scored in the fifth inning but was able to exit with a CU lead.

The final two runs of the night were scored in the bottom of the fifth by the Tigers as Amenta added another RBI single and Jaylin Turner picked up an RBI single as well.

Gage Smart closed out the seventh inning with a three-up, three-down outing out of the bullpen with a strikeout to end the night.

Campbellsville and Martin Methodist will finish their series Friday afternoon with first pitch of the final game scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at HIG Field.
