SIOUX CITY, Iowa. — Campbellsville sprinted to an 18-7 first-quarter lead, built it to 20 points at intermission, and sent Lewis-Clark State packing with a 69-53 win at the 40th Annual NAIA Women's National Basketball Championship at the Tyson Events Center.
The win secures a quarterfinal spot against the winner at 7 ET Saturday of the Southeastern-Indiana Wesleyan game that is under way at this time.
Sammy Rogers scored a team-high 16 points and her 12 boards gave her a double-double. The dozen rebounds are a career high. The rest of the CU lineup gave her ample support as nine other players reached the scoring column.
Lewis-Clark (14-6) went on scoring droughts of three and four minutes in the first half which allowed the Lady Tigers to build their lead.
Rogers had nine points at intermission and
Sarah Sutton and
Ashlee McGeorge added 6 each. Campbellsville beat the much taller Warriors 27-10 on the boards in the first half and turned them over 11 times and collecting eight second-chance points. They won the boards 50-26 overall.
Lexy Lake drilled a 3 in the second quarter that sent the Lady Tigers on a 9-2 run and a 32-14 lead.
Lewis-Clarke turned up the heat from 3 in the second half after going 1-6 from the arc in the first half. The Warriors' Peyton Souvenir hit two treys in the third quarter and her fifth of the game closed L-C to within 61-45.
But Campbellsville (20-2) used 4-for-6 free throw shooting down the stretch to hold Lewis-Clark at bay.
Courtney Pritchett went to work in the fourth quarter, scoring six of her eight points in a stretch when Campbellsville was looking for points.
Lauren Lee, Pritchett and Rogers all had three assists.
