Lady Tigers sweep Martin Methodist in rescheduled doubleheader 5-4 and 14-6

PULASKI, Tenn. — A combined 19 runs in two games helped Campbellsville University softball to a doubleheader sweep over Martin Methodist College on Tuesday afternoon.

The 12th-ranked Lady Tigers won 5-4 in game one and 14-6 in game two to extend their record to 23-7 overall and 14-2 inside Mid-South Conference play.

Katie Chadwell and Karson Williams both picked up their 10th wins of the season after throwing complete games. Chadwell (10-3) tossed seven innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out three in game one. Williams (10-1) went the distance allowing nine hits and four earned runs while also striking out three.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Martin Methodist 4

Outside of a four-run second inning, game one was a struggle for CU offensively. The RedHawks got on the board first with an RBI ground out by Chloe Clavon to put MMC ahead, 1-0. That lead didn't last long as the Lady Tigers picked up a pair of two RBI doubles by Mia Aldridge and Ryley Whitney.

Chadwell allowed a run in the third bringing the score to 4-2. Clavon once again drove in the RedHawk run with a single to left field.

Campbellsville answered in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-3. Riley Hurst delivered an RBI fielder's choice scoring Lexi Miller

In the seventh, Chadwell got into a little trouble with a pair of walks that came around to score on errors, but she closed the door to seal the win.

Game two: Campbellsville 14, Martin Methodist 6

It seemed like the Lady Tigers would run away with game two until a fifth inning rain delay halted the momentum.

Payton Blades put CU ahead with a three-run blast in the first – her team-leading fifth homer of the year. Leading 3-0 after one, the Lady Tigers extended that lead to 4-0 after Taylor Windell scored on a wild pitch in the second.

Williams then got into a little trouble in the second inning after three singles, a couple fielder's choices, a hit-by-pitch and error defensively. But she worked out of the jam only giving up two runs and striking out Chaney Dutton to leave the bases loaded and CU ahead, 4-2.

The Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the fourth after Morgan Carter delivered her first home run of her career – a two-run no doubter to left field.

In the fifth, CU scored three more. Blades drove in one with an RBI double and she was followed with a Miller RBI single to left field to put CU ahead, 6-2. Windell then delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield giving CU a 9-2 lead.

Then the rain entered the Pulaski, Tennessee area and halted the momentum. The RedHawks got back within reach after scoring four runs after a rain delay.

But the offense picked up the defense and pitching again in the sixth scoring five runs and pushing the lead, where it would end, 14-6.
