Williams shines in game four with help from Blades and Humphrey long balls

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands entered Hord Softball Field at Veterans Memorial Park and won three of the four games in a crucial Mid-South Conference series on Friday and Saturday.

The 12th-ranked Lady Tigers (24-10, 15-5 MSC) dropped two games on Friday, 7-2 and 4-2, before falling on Saturday, 12-4 in game three. Campbellsville was able to salvage a win in game four, 4-2.

The lone bright spot of the weekend came in game four of the series as Karson Williams shined in the circle and got some help from teammates Payton Blades and Tori Humphrey at the plate.

After allowing a leadoff double and sacrifice fly to put Cumberlands ahead, 1-0, in the first, Williams would sit down 18 of the next 21 and at one time 10 in a row. She got into trouble in the seventh inning, but Katy Chadwell entered in the circle to earn her first save of the season.

Williams went 6.1 innings allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four.

The offense was a step behind Cumberland all weekend until Blades delivered a two-run blast in the second inning of game four giving CU its first lead of the series, 2-1. In the fourth, Humphrey hit a missile over the right-center fence to make it a 3-1 game.

Mia Aldridge gave CU a much-needed insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single to right field after a Madison Davis leadoff walk.

Cumberlands (28-10, 9-5 MSC) had stellar pitching for three of the four games. Kaiti White tossed a complete game in the opener and then reached the fifth inning in game three of the series. She struck out a combined 10 batters and allowed four earned runs.

Talli Burgess, Lindsey Shope and Kaci Goedde all pitched in games two and four of the series. Burgess had solid stuff in the second game on Friday allowing only two earned runs while Shope and Goedde shut down CU.

In game four, the Lady Tigers had the three run-scoring hits off Burgess but that was all CU could muster off the freshmen hurlers. Burgess struck out five in the fourth game allowing three earned runs.

The Lady Tigers now sit in second place in the Mid-South Conference standings while Cumberlands moves to fourth. Lindsey Wilson – which lost its first game of the year, 1-0, to Martin Methodist on Friday – sits atop the MSC entering today with a 21-1 record in conference.
