Solid pitching mixed with quiet bats hurts Tigers in MSC sweep for Bethel

McKENZIE, Tenn. — Solid pitching mixed with quiet bats isn't a recipe for success as Tiger baseball learned the hard way this weekend. Campbellsville lost all three games at Bethel University, 1-0, 1-0, and 4-3.

The 1-0 loss on Friday night was a walk-off homer for the Wildcats. The 1-0 loss in game two of the series on Saturday came after a one-out walk scored on an error. In game three, the Tigers got down 4-0 in the first inning but couldn't muster enough offense in the seven-inning finale.

Eddie Arteaga was the lone bright spot offensively hitting a single in the fourth inning that led to a run after an error. Then a two-out two-run homer in the sixth inning by Arteaga brought CU back within a run as the Tigers took advantage of a leadoff walk and error. But that was all the offense CU could muster.

Zack Bromstead went five innings allowing only one hit and striking out six. He gave way to Gage Smart for the final three innings and he struck out four Wildcats.

In game two today, it was Kam Robertson coming into relief for Trestyn DeMilieu. After allowing four runs on two hits and three walks by DeMilieu, Robertson shutdown the Wildcats for the next 4.1 innings. Logan Davis pitched the sixth inning and didn't allow a hit.

The Mid-South Conference series sweeping loss is the first in three years for CU and just the second in the last eight years.

Campbellsville drops to 2-4 overall and 2-4 inside Mid-South Conference play as the Tigers are battling through injuries in a big way this spring.

CU returns to action next week as the Tigers travel to Rio Grande on Tuesday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
