LEBANON, Tenn. – In the final game for the 2020 football regular season, the Campbellsville University football team dropped a tough 14-9 game to Cumberland University Friday night.
The Tigers shutout the Phoenix in the first half but were only able to get a field goal on the board as
Devin Neally hit a 30-yard attempt on their first drive of the game in the first quarter to put Campbellsville up 3-0 heading into halftime.
Campbellsville's defense forced five turnovers, three fumbles and two turnovers on downs, along with three punts while holding the Phoenix to only 119 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes of the game.
It did not take Cumberland long in the second half to get on the board to take a lead as they forced a punt on the Tigers' opening drive of the half then went 74 yards on two plays and 42 seconds for their first score. The big play was the scoring play as running back Treylon Sheppard went 72 yards for the touchdown to make it a 7-3 game.
The Phoenix, this time, stifled the Campbellsville offense in the second half, only allowing the Tigers to cross the 50 yard line twice in the half as the Tigers punted the ball six times in the second half.
Cumberland added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull it to 14-3, this time on a Bret Robinson three-yard rushing touchdown early in the quarter as the drive started in the third.
There was no quit in the Tigers though as they were able to get into the end zone themselves as quarterback
Chase Elmore hit
Patrick Oden for a 38-yard score as they made it 14-9 after a failed two-point attempt that would have made it a field goal game with 1:14 left in the game.
Elmore played in his first game since being hurt on Mar. 12 at Georgetown as the freshman signal caller had a decent performance going 17-of-36 for 162 yards and a touchdown. Oden had a strong game as the No. 1 target for Elmore with
Tate Pringle out due to injury as the freshman receiver finished with seven catches for 93 yards and that touchdown, all career highs.
Sheppard finished with 166 yards on the ground for the Phoenix as Cumberland ended up rushing for 250 yards with their triple-option style offense and only passing for 69 yards in the win.
Campbellsville will have a quicker offseason turnaround now as they prepare for the 2021 season that is scheduled to start on Sept. 4 with fall camp beginning in early August for the Tigers.
