Tigers win first Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship in thrilling five-set match against Georgetown

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Looking to become double champions after claiming the regular season title, the Campbellsville University men's volleyball team grinded out a 3-2 win over Georgetown College to earn the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship, the first in the history of the program.

CU looked to be on form early with a 25-14 first set win but Georgetown pulled out a pair of 25-22 set wins in the second and third before Campbellsville took the final two sets 25-20 and 16-14.

Campbellsville finished each set but the second with a better attack percentage as they finished the match with 61 kills on 128 total attacks with 22 errors for a .305 team hitting percentage. Georgetown finished at a .210 percentage with 48 kills on 119 attacks and 22 errors.

Setters Jeremy Hernandez (26 assists) and Ryan Smith (24 assists) spread the ball around to four different players predominantly with Ho Yin Leung (15), Isaac Paches (15), Rafael Cruz (11), and Ramon Matos (11) finishing in double digits with kills.

Conversely, GC's Kacper Dobrowolski stuck to a main attack of Ryan Gunn and Krzysztof Kowalski as the duo combined for 38 of the team's 48 kills. Krzysztof finished with a match-high 25 kills on 41 attacks for a .488 hitting percentage as Gunn, the MSC Player and Freshman of the Year, finished with 13 kills on 41 attacks for a .122 hitting percentage.

The defensive efforts were strong for CU as they finished with 42 digs and nine blocks, the final block sealing the championship match point as Noah Henkel and Smith teamed up to reject an attack by Gunn for the final point in the fifth set.

Smith and Matos were both in on five of the team's block as the pair both had a solo and four block assists in the match. Libero Jay Montalvo (12), Jason Camacho (9), Jose Viera Cerame (7), and Leung (6) led the back row efforts as the teams leaders in digs to help keep Georgetown off the board, especially late.

Both Campbellsville and Georgetown received the Mid-South Conference automatic bids into the NAIA Championship, to begin play on Apr. 20 with the tournament format being pool play to be able to advance into the semifinals.
