Lady Tigers hit the long ball but split with Union on Tuesday

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — A tale of two games on Tuesday for Campbellsville University softball ended with a doubleheader split with Union College. The Lady Tigers won game one, 8-1, but lost in game two, 7-4.

Offensively, CU was led by Ryley Whitney's 3-for-8 doubleheader with four RBI, two homers, and a double. Mia Aldridge and Tori Humphrey also tallied three hits in the two-game set. Aldridge scored two runs and drove in another while Humphrey scored one run.

Game one: Campbellsville 8, Union 1

Katy Chadwell was solid in game one going five innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out four. Courtney Patterson tossed the final two innings and allowing only one hit.

The Lady Tigers scored six runs and brought eight batters to the plate in the first inning to set the tone. Whitney delivered her first homer of the day – a two-run shot – to put CU ahead 2-0 early. Then it was a double by Humphrey, single by Payton Blades, followed by an RBI hit by Madison Davis to put CU ahead 3-0.

A wild pitch scored Blades to make it 4-0 then Ryleigh Oldham delivered a two-out two-RBI hit up the middle to make it 6-0.

Facing a new pitcher, Abby Wall, in the second inning, it was Aldridge starting the rally with a leadoff walk followed by an RBI double by Whitney to make it 5-0.

Union scratched its lone run of the game in the third inning after a two-out single by Ariel Dailey scored Makayla Gore.

CU cashed in an insurance run in the seventh after Riley Hurst delivered a solo homer to lead off the frame.

Game two: Union 7, Campbellsville 4

In game two, Karson Williams fell victim to four walks and allowed five earned runs through 3.2 innings. Patterson pitched for the final 2.1 innings, but the CU offense couldn't muster the timely hits.

The Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a leadoff triple by Sam McKee. Aldridge scored her with a squeeze bunt then Whitney delivered another homer to make it 2-0.

Union answered in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out walk extended the inning and Sarah Lowe delivered a two-run double to tie it at 2-2.

CU got back on top by taking advantage of a leadoff error allowing Blades to reach. She scored on a RBI single by Lexi Miller to left-center to put CU ahead, 3-2.

But then it was a four-run fourth inning that hurt Williams and Patterson in the circle – three of them coming with two outs. A one-out triple by Lily Ayers scored on a squeeze bunt before am intentional walk to Dailey put runners on first and second with two outs.

Patterson relieved Williams and allowed a single to right field which tied the game at 3-all. Then a two-out double by Mackenzie McMahan scored two more runs increasing the lead to 6-3. The Bulldogs cashed in another run on a single by Sarah Lowe.

CU had a chance in the top of the fifth inning after Aldridge singles and Humphrey doubled but CU couldn't muster the timely hit.

In the sixth, Keely Bowling provided a little life to the dugout with a solo homer to center cutting the score to 6-4 but Union answered in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs had a leadoff single, one-out double and took advantage of an error to extend their lead, 7-4.

The Lady Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the seventh to finish.
