Big blasts and terrific defense lead Lady Tigers past Georgetown in series sweep

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Five home runs and spectacular defense pushed the 24th ranked Lady Tigers to a series sweep over rival Georgetown College on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Tigers secured their second run rule of the series with a 12-3 win in game one as CU hit four homers in the opener on Saturday. Then the defense secured the win in game two, 9-6.

Overall, the Lady Tigers tallied 27 hits in the two games and scored 34 runs in the series.
Payton Blades led the way offensively going 5-for-7 on the day with a double and four singles scoring four runs. Madison Davis continued her stellar play of late with four hits – including her second straight game with a home run – and also a game-high in the first contest Saturday with five RBI.

Mia Aldridge also had two hits in each game – four on the day – and drove in four runs. Hannah Judd finished with a homer in each game on Saturday and drove in five runs in total.

Game one: Campbellsville 12, Georgetown 3

After a leadoff home runs by Georgetown's Carly Oliver, Katy Chadwell was really good in the win allowing eight hits and striking out four. Courtney Patterson pitched the final third inning in the sixth and didn't allow a base runner.

The Lady Tigers scored three unanswered in the second and third innings as a leadoff hit-by-pitch to Tori Humphrey and double by Blades scored on a Davis two-RBI groundout to right field.

Georgetown brought the score to 3-2 in CU's favor after four innings but a combined nine runs in the final two innings for the Lady Tigers run-ruled the Tigers in orange and black. Ryley Whitney delivered a two-run homer and was followed with another two-run blast by Judd before Ryleigh Oldham drove in Davis with an RBI single to put CU ahead, 9-3

In the sixth, Humphrey delivered an RBI double and Davis cleared the bases with a three-run blast to end it via a run-rule, 12-3.

Game two: Campbellsville 9, Georgetown 6

The Lady Tigers didn't take much time to take an early lead in game two. A four-run frame thanks to a three-run homer by Judd and sac fly by Whitney put the Lady Tigers ahead big.

But Georgetown answered against southpaw Karson Williams in the circle. Williams allowed a one-out walk followed by three straight hits including a two-run double by nine-hole hitter Kristen Klimesh and RBI single by Carly Oliver.

CU went back ahead 5-3 after two and it was 6-4 after four innings. Then things got interesting late. Georgetown cut the lead to 6-5 after a one-out homer by Madie Sims. Courtney Patterson entered in relief of Williams and worked out of a major jam with a strikeout to end the GC threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, CU took advantage of a hustle play by Georgetown's right fielder, Kylee West. Aldridge hit a sinking liner to right and West's diving attempt came up short and the ball rolled to the fence. Miller and Sam McKee both scored to put CU ahead, 8-6, on the triple. Then Whitney drove in Aldridge for some insurance.

In the seventh, Georgetown was threatening again. Patterson allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases but Chadwell entered in a save situation. After a fielder's choice RBI by Annie Campbell, Madie Sims popped up the left-center, Lexi Miller made the catch and threw out Ella Florish at home for the game-ending double play.

Williams earned the win and improved her record to 15-4 overall and Chadwell earned her second save of the year.
