CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Big innings were the story of the day in Campbellsville University baseball's doubleheader against Thomas More on Friday afternoon as each team took home wins with late inning heroics.
The Saints evened the series at one game apiece with an 11-9 win that CU looked to steal late as the Tigers did steal game three of the series with seven runs in the top of the seventh in the seven-inning series finale for a 12-8 win.
Campbellsville hit six home runs on the day, four in the finale, as
Matt Lawson,
Eddy Arteaga,
Sam Fagerness,
Jaylin Turner,
Dutton Elske, and
Aaron Greenfield all went deep on the day.
GAME 1 SUMMARY
There were three separate frames of four or more runs in game one including four in the bottom of the second, seven in the top of the seventh, and five in the bottom of the eighth.
The first big blow in the bottom of the second came in the form of four Saints runs off of CU starter
Korren Thompson. Thompson walked three batters and hit another to allow Thomas More to score their runs on only two hits.
The Tigers made attempts to chip away at the TMU lead in both the third and fifth innings but on both occasions, Thomas More answered with a run in the bottoms of both of those innings.
It took an explosive seventh inning from the CU offense to finally get back into the game as it was two long balls with two outs in the inning to take it from a 6-2 TMU lead to a 9-6 Campbellsville lead.
It started with Lawson's first career homer as a Tiger as he hit a grand slam out to left to tie the game at 6-6 as three batters later Arteaga launched a three-run shot to centerfield to give CU their first lead of the game.
The eighth inning snowballed on the combination of
Logan Davis and
Mason Lee as the Saints scored five runs on four hits with a walk and a hit by pitch as they regained a two-run lead that they eventually won by at 11-9.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
A very busy second inning saw Fagerness hit his home run with a two-run shot to put Campbellsville up 2-0 but the Saints quickly answered with four in the bottom half off of
Aaron Hutchinson to give TMU their own two-run lead at 4-2.
After both teams added a run in the third to make it 5-3, Turner launched a solo shot to leadoff the fourth inning and make it a one-run game. A leadoff double from Elske in the sixth followed by a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5.
Another answer from the Saints looked to finally put CU away in this final game as they knocked Hutchinson out of the game, scoring their three runs on four hits with an error off of the combination of Hutchinson and
Trestyn DuMilieu.
It was the Tigers' second seven-run seventh inning of the day that allowed CU to pull ahead 12-8 after Elske gave Campbellsville another lead with a 3-run home run to left as Greenfield followed up three pitches later with a solo blast to make it 11-8.
Campbellsville rallied for another insurance run after the back-to-back shots but it was just cushion as DuMilieu went one-two-three in the bottom of the inning with two strikeouts to close out the Tiger victory.
With the series win for the Tigers, they appear to have clinch a home series in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Opening Round, passing Thomas More to move into the No. 6 seed in the regular season standings.
There are more games to play this weekend inside of MSC play but none look to impact CU's placement as Campbellsville and Thomas More appear to be on a collision course to meet right back up next weekend at HIG Field.
