MSC CHAMPS! Lady Tigers sweep Thomas More to win ninth MSC title and clinch No. 1 seed

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Good pitching, great defense, and stellar hitting led Campbellsville University softball to a doubleheader sweep over Thomas More University crowning the Lady Tigers as Mid-South Conference Co-Champions.

The Lady Tigers entered the weekend needing for wins to earn co-champ honors and pick up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. They did just that and actually picked up the honor in grand fashion, outscoring Thomas More on the weekend, 33-7.

CU matches Lindsey Wilson with 27-5 conference records and both are deemed co-champions. But the tie breaker for the No. 1 seed went down to the fifth-seeded Bethel Wildcats. The Lady Tigers won 3-of-4 over Bethel and Lindsey Wilson split its series.

Game one: Campbellsville 7, Thomas More 0

Katy Chadwell tossed a six-hit complete game shutout striking out eight. Thomas More had an opportunity in the fourth to scratch a run after two infield singles but Chadwell earned one of her four strikeouts looking to get out of the jam.

In the sixth, the Lady Tiger defense picked Chadwell up with a timely double play. With the bases loaded and only one out, Baylee Hoebeika lined out to Hannah Judd and she doubled off pinch-runner Lindsey Meier at first base to get out of the jam. Chadwell was lights out the rest of the game.

Offensively, the Lady Tigers picked up 1 -0 lead in the first after an RBI single by Payton Blades. She has been on fire as of late going 18-of-26 in the last seven games with four RBI and six runs scored.

After leading 2-0 through three innings, Ryley Whitney pelted her eighth home runs of the season – a two-run blast to right field – giving the Lady Tigers a 4-0 lead.

CU scratched two more insurance runs in the fifth inning with an RBI bunt by Sam McKee and RBI double by Riley Hurst. In the seventh, McKee scored her second run of the day on a wild pitch.

Game two: Campbellsville 8, Thomas More

The Saints took a 2-1 lead after the first inning off Karson Williams as she didn't have her best stuff in the circle. Williams went the distance though allowing five hits and the lone two runs in the opening frame, walking six, and striking out six to pick up her 17th win of the year.

Offensively, the Lady Tigers scored a run in every inning but the seventh. Hannah Judd drove in the first run in the first and then Ryleigh Oldham tied the game at two in the second after an RBI single by Hurst to right field.

CU took its first lead in the third inning after a leadoff double by Whitney and a few wild pitches later scoring from third base.

In the fourth, it was the final single run inning for CU after a leadoff double by Madison Davis scored on an RBI double by Mia Aldridge

Leading 4-2 after four, the round trippers woke the dugout up. Tori Humphrey delivered a solo shot in the fifth and a two-run blast in the sixth and now has the team-lead with 10 home runs. Keely Bowling also came up clutch with a pinch-hit RBI double to help the scoring in game two.

Up Next:
The Lady Tigers will have almost two weeks to prepare for the MSC Tournament which will be played on May 5-9 at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. More information will be released by the conference in the coming days with ticket information.
