CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In what was the most tightly contested game of the day, the Campbellsville University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker of a game to Cumberland University in a penalty kick shootout Friday afternoon.
The Tigers and the Phoenix were tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods to head into the PK shootout where things went very much in the favor of Cumberland.
Round one was taken by Cumberland's Thomas Groenhilder and Campbellsville's
Sebastiano Musu as Groenhilder converted and Musu shot his high and wide to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage out of the gate.
Aidan Doherty for Cumberland and
Tom Edge for Campbellsville both converted as it was Phoenix goalkeeper Carl Koester that saved
Eleder Goicoechea's attempt after Brandon Gonzalez scored making it a 3-1 Cumberland lead.
Tiger keeper
Jeremi Campagnolo saved John Azar's PK with
Simon Zahalka scoring to force Cumberland to take their fifth shot, but Joaquin Carillo buried it to seal the win for Cumberland and move them on to the semifinals.
It was a 0-0 game through almost 70 minutes before Edge scored the first goal of the game on a shot from outside of the box that beat Koester to his left as it went off the right post and in to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Cumberland was able to tie the score with under 10 minutes remaining as Tyler Watson was able to make a tight move in the box and score inside of the right post by Campagnolo to tie the score.
It would remain tied through the overtimes into the shootout as Cumberland advances to take on No. 1 Bethel in tomorrow's semis.
This game likely ends the 2020 season for Campbellsville men's soccer at an 11-5-3 overall record as head coach
Adam Preston expects to return most, if not all of his roster players from this year heading into the 2021 season that will kick back up in August.
