CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers could not get their game going on either side of the ball Thursday night losing to the Thomas More University Saints 73-28.
The Saints marched 73 yards down the field on their opening drive. Quarterback Rae'Von Vaden broke free for a 36-yard rush to the Campbellsville 35 and from there a few more rushing plays would result in the first touchdown of the game. The Tigers would convert on a third down on the following possession, but their second set of downs led to a punt. 11 plays and 70 yards later and Thomas More recorded another touchdown. The Saints would put 21 points on the board, and it would be a scoreless first quarter for the Tigers in response.
In the second quarter, Campbellsville went for a fourth and three which quarterback
Chase Elmore was able to convert. Just as momentum picked up in the Tigers' favor, a big pass play was negated by offensive interference. Then, on third down, a huge sack by Thomas More's Seth Noel forced another punt by the Tigers. After another touchdown by the Saints' offense, the Tigers would give the ball up on a turnover-on-downs. However, on the first play of the Saints' following drive, defensive back
Kobe Reese forced a fumble that led to a Tiger recovery. Campbellsville would score from their prime field position at the Thomas More 11 yard-line off an Elmore 1-yard run.
Reaching halftime 35-7 in favor of the Saints, the Tigers sought to halt the Saints run and give their offense a shot of adrenaline, but those intentions were unable to coalesce. It would be a three-and-out to start the half for Campbellsville. Thomas More would score 17 unanswered points before
Kel Hawkins returned a kickoff for 90 yards to the house. 14 more points by the Saints would precede an Elmore 12-yard run for his second rushing touchdown of the night. Thomas More and Campbellsville would trade touchdowns in four consecutive possessions to end the game. The last score would be a seven-yard strike from Elmore to Zac Cole.
The Tigers simply could not stop the Saints' run game allowing 397 yards on the ground. Thomas More's average yards gained per rush was 8.6 compared to Campbellsville's 3.3. The Tigers simply were not able to establish their offensive agenda. That fact was exacerbated by the Saints' defense logging three interceptions off Elmore. Thomas More would finish the contest with 499 total yards off five different rushers having 50 yards or more while Campbellsville posted 326 total yards led by Elmore's 179 in the air and D'Anta Sipp's 66 rushing yards.
Dequantay Shannon was just behind Sipp's total with 51 yards on the ground of his own. Elmore would tally two rushing touchdowns for 39 yards total.
The Tigers will look to notch their first win of the season on Homecoming next week when they face the University of Pikeville Bears on October 9
