Tigers come up short against #13 Saints

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Campbellsville University men's basketball team took the court against Mid-South Conference foe Thomas More University Thursday night. The Tigers dropped the contest to the Saints: 78-66.

Campbellsville's offense started slow from the tip. Thomas More was first to score and then continued to capitalize off their quick start. The Tigers were down by 8-0 before Jarius Key took the ball to the basket. His teammates, Jace Wallace and Darius Harding, hit back-to-back shots from the arc attempting to claw back from the early hole. After battling back and bringing the score close, Campbellsville allowed the Saints to hand them a ten-point deficit. Wallace aided his team by going on a five-point run himself to cut the lead to five. The Saints stretched their advantage back to double digits, but a couple of baskets from Peyton Broughton brought the Tigers once again within five. At the buzzer, Wallace hit a three-point basket to end the half trailing 39-35.

The Tigers capitalized off their shooting to keep up with the Saints. The Tigers surpassed their season averages recording a 51.9 field goal percent and a 45.5 three-point percent. Neither team totaled fast break points due to the low number of turnovers on either side. Going into the half, Wallace led his team with 11 points, Harding with nine points, and Broughton with eight points. Defensively, Harding held four rebounds.

To begin the second half, Thomas More went straight to the paint to score four points consecutively. The Saints accrued another double-digit lead early on. After the Saints obtained a 15-point lead, neither team scored for the next two minutes until Malachi De Sousa made a free throw. Thomas More dug into the Tigers' offensive efforts to collect another large lead. The Saints heavily capitalized off rebounds (35) to ensure baskets whereas the Tigers struggled to end possessions with boards of their own (21). Keaston Brown made a significant dent in the deficit with uninterrupted buckets from the arc. With a minute remaining, a Broughton layup brought the score back to a ten-point contest. Campbellsville was unable to collect a win and dropped their Mid-South Conference matchup to Thomas More 78-66.

With the loss, Campbellsville is now 9-7 on the season overall but only 2-6 in conference play. Broughton finished the night with 18 points, Wallace and Harding with 12 points, and De Sousa with ten. Wallace amassed half of the team's total assists (6). Wallace and Harding collected four rebounds each and teammates Brown and Key logged three rebounds apiece.

The Tigers reemerge Saturday, January 8th for another Mid-South contest. Campbellsville will face off against #21 Shawnee State University beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
