PULASKI, Tenn. – The Campbellsville University women's basketball team headed south to Pulaski, Tennessee for a competition at UT Southern. The Lady tigers put away their first Mid-South conference match-up in a 83-60 point win.
The Lady Tigers trailed to begin the match until Maddy Boyle put numbers on the board with a three-point shot. Campbellsville continued to bust open their lead as they were ahead seven-points five-minutes into the competition with the assistance of Boyle's and Bailey Pedigo's shots from the arc. The Lady Tigers did not keep a wide lead as the Firehawks made offensive moves to keep the score close.
In the opening seconds of the second quarter, Kaitlynn Wilks made a jump shot to increase the Lady Tiger's lead. Elizabeth Bertram found a spot on at the three to put the Lady Tigers ahead by double-digits. Bertram doubled back down the court for another three-point bucket increasing Campbellsville's lead. It was a back-and-forth battle between the Lady Tigers and the Firehawks as UT Southern wanted to keep their deficit short. Ut Southern acquired six consecutive points to reign in Campbellsville to a 6-point lead.
At the half, the Lady Tigers had been forced into nine turnovers which the Firehawks converted into 11 points. However, Campbellsville led in field-goal percentage with their 55.6% compared to the Firehawks 50%.
Into the third quarter, Lauren Lee and Wilks propelled the Lady Tigers forward. Pedigo's jumper placed Campbellsville at a 12-point lead and Bertram's layup earned Campbellsville their largest lead at 14 points. The Firehawks were not letting the Lady Tigers off easily. Campbellsville extended their lead with a six-point run as Kayla Lubbe and Bertram took shots from the charity stripe accompanied by Maddie Nalley's layup.
Wilks put the Lady Tigers at a 20-point lead with her layup. When the UT Southern scratched back, Wilks returned with another layup to cancel out their attempt. Lubbe continued to keep Campbellsville ahead as she established the Firehawks' 26-point discrepancy following her defensive rebound. Boyle captured the Lady Tigers largest lead of 29-points with her bucket from the arc. By game's end, the Firehawks decreased their shortfall to 23-points as Campbellsville put UT Southern away.
The Lady Tigers improved their field-goal percentage slightly with a 57.7%. Ball movement was a key factor in this match as Campbellsville's 20 assists aided in their score. On offense, 30 points sourced from the bench and 38 points were made in the paint. Collectively, the Lady Tigers amassed 28 total rebounds. Wilks ended her playing time leading the Lady tigers with 15 points and Bertram behind her with 14. Boyle and Lubbe both tallied 12 points apiece while Pedigo trailed with 11.
The Lady Tigers will continue their stay in Tennessee as they take on Cumberland University Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET with the Campbellsville men's team to follow.
