PULASKI, Tenn. – The #5 Lady Tigers finished out their weekend trip with a game against UT Southern. The Lady Tigers came out on top over the Firehawks moving to 15-3 in the Mid-South Conference and 23-3 overall.
The first quarter started with a three from
Faith Lake less than thirty seconds into the game. Then,
Bailey Pedigo stole the ball giving the Lady Tigers another offensive possession. The team took advantage of that steal and
Courtney Pritchett made a three-point shot giving CU an early 6-0 lead. Halfway through the first, the Lady Tigers were hot around the arc with another three from Lake making the score 9-4. To close out that quarter, the Firehawks started to cut into the lead giving the Lady Tigers a one-point lead going into the second, 15-14.
It was the start of the second quarter and the Lady Tigers made back-to-back layups extending their lead to five. UT Southern answered those layups with a few of their own and minimized their deficit. With five minutes to halftime, the score was 22-20. Both teams were quiet offensively for almost three minutes of play, but the Lady Tigers broke that scoring drought with a layup from Boyle. To close out the last few minutes of the first half, CU only scored one more basket as the Firehawks battled back with two made field goals. It was a close game going into the half with a two-point Lady Tiger lead, 26-24.
After the first half, Lake led the team with eight points and Boyle was just behind her with six. Both teams were struggling to convert their shots to points with Campbellsville shooting 41.7% in the first quarter and then just 31.3% in the second quarter while the Firehawks posted 33.3% and then 35.7%. Campbellsville's 16 first half turnovers were keeping UT Southern in the contest.
The Lady Tigers opened up the second half with a 5-0 run, but through the first five minutes UT Southern answered a few buckets of their own and tied up the game. The Lady Tigers then went on a 15-0 scoring run to take over the lead. The run started with a three-point bucket from
Sarah Sutton and two more threes from Boyle. The Lady Tigers closed out the third quarter with that run and the advantage, 50-37.
The Firehawks made the first bucket of the fourth quarter and attempted to cut into the Lady Tiger's lead. Campbellsville saw one more three-point basket from Boyle. UT Southern attempted to rally back through the last quarter of the game, but couldn't quite surmount an advance. The Lady Tigers won the game by 10 points with the final score of 64-54.
The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Boyle with 15 points and Lake behind her with 11 points. The team shot 39.2% on field goals (well below their season average of 46.5%), 33.3% on three pointers, and 89.5% on free throws. Also, the Lady Tigers saw 29 bench points compared to UT Southern's seven, and Campbellsville outrebounded the Firehawks 43-21.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action Tuesday as they face Life University. The game will begin at 6 p.m. ET in Powell Athletic Center.
