Tigers get big first win over Midway 17-5

MIDWAY, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Baseball team headed to the home of the Midway Eagles Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers added a win to their record with a 17-5 defeat over Midway.

Within the first inning, the Tigers captured all base pads but couldn't seem to execute as no runs were scored in Campbellsville's first attempt at the bats. Midway jumped out early and capitalized off walks and a wild pitch to ensure a two-run lead going into the second inning. Neither team advanced as it was three up and three down for both the Eagles and the Tigers.

The Midway Eagles' pitcher struggled as he had placed three runners on the bases with three consecutive walks. Eddy Arteaga singled out to right field for a two-run RBI to even the score. Campbellsville swapped pitchers as Deshawn Welch stepped on the mound. His pitching and Tiger defense held the Eagles at two runs.

The top of the fourth rewarded the Tigers by adding an ample number of runs to their score. Kale Sietz pushed runner, Grant McQueary (hit by pitch), around to third with his single to right field. Josiah Clark hit a dinger to left field for a three-run RBI scoring Seitz and McQueary. Kevin Whitaker followed trend as he doubled to right center and fellow Tiger, Noah Amenta, stroked a ball to right center and scored Whitaker. Cameron Castaneda hacked to left field for a homerun of his own scoring Amenta. The batting order had made its way full circle before the Eagles decided to switch pitchers. Clark reappeared at the plate to collect another homerun and three more RBIs. Clark's hack boosted the team's lead to ten.

The Eagles put resistance on the Tigers when they cultivated a double into a run with an RBI single. However, Campbellsville shut out the remaining batter advancing into the seventh inning 12-3.

In the top of the eighth inning, Logan Verble and Kye Seitz mustered up a pair of singles to bases. Alex Castaneda followed his teammates as he reached first on an error from the Eagles. Whitaker singled to center field for a two-run RBI. Gonzalez reached first on a fielder's choice and Alex Castaneda scored. Tyler Belcher's RBI single scored Gonzalez and Cameron Castaneda's sacrifice fly allowed Amenta to reach home. Midway answered with a two-run homerun but the Tigers finalized the win with a strikeout.

As a team, Campbellsville totaled 17 RBIs, six of them belonging to Clark. Midway had only acquired four RBIs. The Tigers appeared at the plate 41 times versus the 29 at bats that the Eagles were awarded. Campbellsville pitching was strong as the crew only gave up four hits out of the seven Tigers who stepped on the mound.

The Tigers will continue on the road to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to compete against William Carey University this weekend. The Tigers will compete on both Friday and Saturday with games beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
