Tigers drop back-and-forth battle with Shawnee

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University men's basketball team competed against Shawnee State University Thursday evening. The Tigers left Powell Athletic Center with a 71-63 loss to their Mid-South Conference foe.

Shawnee began the first quarter with a bucket in their second possession. After several attempts, the Tigers evened the score at two with a jumper from Keaston Brown. The teams traded points for a few possessions until the Bears were placed at the free throw line. These free shots ensured a three-point lead over the Tigers. Jarius Key's basket from the perimeter closed the gap. After leading by six, the Bears traveled back to a one-point discrepancy. A layup earned Shawnee the upper hand, but Ross Ryan's free throws restored the Tigers' lead. Cameron Carmical hit a buzzer-beater from the arc to reclaim the advantage 30-29.

At the half, Campbellsville had best the Bears in field goal percentage (40% compared to 38.7%), three-point percentage (20% compared to 11.1%), and free throw percentage (88.9% compared to 66.7%). Jace Wallace led his team with four rebounds while teammates, Peyton Broughton and Carmical, followed with three. Broughton led his team with eight points while Key trailed with five.

The Bears jumped out early with a three-point basket to get ahead of the Tigers by two. Brown made two consecutive jump-shots that took the Tigers over the top. Shawnee was awarded fouls as well as earned baskets to knock Campbellsville down to a five-point shortfall. Wallace drove to the hoop to receive a basket and a foul. His bucket combined with his free-throws placed the Tigers behind by one. Shawnee accumulated a quick eight points, uninterrupted by Campbellsville, which led the Tigers to intensify their efforts offensively. Despite Campbellsville's renewed aggression in the driving lanes, Shawnee had acquired an 11-point lead. However, Malachi De Sousa made a bucket form the arc to reign it back to eight. De Sousa had a ten-point accumulation by himself until Wallace aided in their attempt to scratch at the Bears' lead in the final minutes. Ultimately, Shawnee took the win in a score of 71-63.

Compared to the Bears, the Tigers fell short in field-goal percentage by 5.5% and in three-pointers by almost 6%. Wallace capped the night with 15 points and nine rebounds. De Sousa finished with 14 points while Brown and Broughton finished with eight points. Carmical and Key totaled five rebounds apiece.

The Tigers will face-off Thomas More University as a close of regular season Saturday afternoon. The match will be held at Powell Athletic Center and tip-off is to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
