PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers traveled to the University of Pikeville in hopes of advancing in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Tigers fell to UPIKE 75-71 and wrapped up their season.
UPIKE won the tip and scored in their first possession. The Tigers earned their first two points of the game with a spin move and made layup from
Jace Wallace. Both teams were energetic on the court and it was clear they both came ready to play. A few minutes went by without a made shot because of the tenacious defense from both teams.
Ross Ryan made his first bucket of the game to end the scoring drought. Pikeville started to warm up around the perimeter with back-to-back threes and took a quick six-point lead.
Peyton Broughton made the first three-pointer for the Tigers cutting into their deficit. Following that,
Darius Harding saw his first points of the game at the charity stripe. The teams fell into another offensive lapse which was settled with a three from Pikeville.
Jarius Key answered that shot with a three of his own and his first points of the night. The Tigers then found themselves within three points after Broughton made his second deep ball of the night.
Malachi De Sousa had his first points at the free throw line which brought CU within four. The Bears then went on to extend their lead with a few unanswered buckets and the Tigers went into halftime trailing by ten.
After the first half, the Tigers are shooting 47.6% on field goals compared to Pikeville's 53.6%. The Tigers were six for six at the free throw line and had 12 rebounds compared to the Bears' ten. Campbellsville was led in scoring by Broughton with 10 points. He was followed by Wallace with seven, Key with five, and Ryan with four.
The Bears opened up the second half with two quick buckets. Key got an offensive rebound, which was Campbellsville's second of the game, and netted two. Campbellsville found themselves down 13 just four minutes into the second half. UPIKE turned the ball over on a shot clock violation and the Tigers took advantage of that with an old fashion three-point play from De Sousa. The Tigers then cut the Bears advtange to eight with back-to-back buckets. Both teams started to see shots fall but the Tigers couldn't get ahead.
Keaston Brown saw his first two points of the game in the second half with an open layup. The Bears, hot around the arch, made another three-point basket and got back their double-digit lead.
Cameron Carmical scored his first points of the game at the free throw line and brought the Tigers back within ten. A few possessions later and Broughton made a defensive stop which resulted in a wide-open layup for him and brought the Tigers to just a six point shortfall. With five minutes left in the game, the Tigers made another defensive stop which led to another easy layup. After the last media timeout, the Bears turned the ball over again and Campbellsville made it a one possession game with a fast break layup. However, UPIKE went on to make a few more unanswered baskets. With two and a half minutes left in the game, De Sousa found himself at the stripe again and brought the Tigers within three, 66-63. To wrap up the final minutes of the game, both teams only made one basket each and the rest of the points came from free throws. De Sousa took the Tigers within three again with 30 seconds left on the clock, but The Tigers fouled UPIKE which put them in the double bonus at the stripe and they converted both opportunities. Both teams committed some fouls to stop the clock and try to get the ball back, but the Bears maintained the lead and the Tigers lost by four, 75-71.
The Tigers shot 47.2% on field goals compared the Bear's 49.1%. Campbellsville outrebounded Pikeville 30-27 and only had seven turnovers versus UPIKE's nine. The Tigers were led in scoring by De Sousa with 22 points and Broughton with 18. They were followed by Wallace and Key with nine points each.
