Tigers come up short in five set war against Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky.- The Tigers headed to #13 Georgetown College to compete Tuesday evening. The Tigers fell to Georgetown 3-2.
 
To begin the match, Ho Yin Leung collected a kill to jump on the rival Tigers. After Bastian Korreck's attack, Campbellsville soared from 4-3 to 8-3 as they capitalized from Georgetown's attacking errors. The Tigers continued to advance due to Georgetown's mistakes. The opposing Tigers took a timeout to return with two kills and shorten the lead. Georgetown couldn't seem to close the five-point lead that Campbellsville held until their three consecutive kills put them back within two points of the Tigers. Georgetown gathered the first tie of the game at 19 since the last even score of three. After battling back-and-forth for the win, a kill from Ryan Smith earned Campbellsville set one. Smith led the team with four kills as well as 10 assists. Leung and Korreck racked up three kills apiece.
 
Into the second set, both teams traded points, but Georgetown was first to lead 5-3 over the Tigers. Niklas Held reigned in the deficit with a kill of his own. Georgetown capitalized off of Campbellsville's errors and surged ahead. Georgetown went on to lead the Tigers by five points before Campbellsville called a timeout. Drew Sims tallied three kills, each time to win back the serve, which projected his team closer to the lead. Jakob Zum Kolk's kill grabbed the upper hand for the Tigers at 15-14. Georgetown answered with two kills of their own. John-Marcos Gonzalez earned back the serve as his attack rang true. Double attack errors on the Tigers put Georgetown at a 20-16 advantage. Campbellsville treaded to get back within a serve's reach of the lead. Andres Laboy's ace left Campbellsville trailing by one and then Korreck's ace evened the score at 21. The Tigers' efforts were not enough as Campbellsville dropped set two.
 
Korreck began the third set with a kill assisted by Smith. This duo solidified another kill for a lead of 7-5 after advancing from Georgetown's blunders. After exchanged serves, triple kills from Korreck propelled Campbellsville to a 12-9 lead. Campbellsville allowed Georgetown to decrease the deficit as they acquired a couple errors along with a couple kills to certify a four-point run. Georgetown earned the lead at 16-15, but Leung tied up the score with a major kill. A kill from Sims took a two-point lead with Campbellsville just six points away from winning set three. Georgetown players racked up three consecutive kills to tie the score at 21. Attacks from Smith and Korreck put Campbellsville ahead yet again. The Tigers won the set 26-24. Korreck tallied six kills within the third set alone to add to his 11 total.
 
Sims started off the fourth set with a kill to push the Tigers ahead. Georgetown answered with a run of four as they collected kills and Campbellsville errors to aid in their advance. Campbellsville climbed back to even the score at six with the help of Georgetown's slip-ups. Held's swing placed the Tigers just one below the tie score. Georgetown acquired another lead, but kills from Korreck, Smith, and Held decreased the discrepancy to 15-13. Georgetown widened their lead because of the Tigers' faults. Campbellsville opted for a timeout as they were down 21-16. Campbellsville was unable to catch up as they fell to the Tigers.
 
In the final set, the teams traded points but errors from Campbellsville attacks left Georgetown leading 6-4. A kill from Korreck and a Georgetown mistake tied up the game at eight. Neither team could refrain from error which kept the game tight. Sim's attack flushed the score at ten. Georgetown continued to rack up a kill count that propelled themselves above the Tigers. The final match set ended in a score of 15-13 and Campbellsville continues now 7-3 on the season.
 
Georgetown finished the evening with a .274 hitting percentage compared to Campbellsville's .181 percent. Korreck led his team with 14 kills with Leung following with 10. Held and Smith both collected nine kills and Smith finished the evening with 37 assists.
 
Campbellsville will continue their road matchups as they see Thomas More University Thursday evening. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. ET.
