Tigers cement sweep over Midway

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers hosted Mid-South Conference foe Midway Tuesday night in Gosser Gymnasium. Campbellsville won the match in three sets and earned their 15th win of the season.

The match started with a lot of energy from the Tigers as they scored seven points before Midway scored their first. Drew Sims had two solo blocks in the first set and set the tone for the Tigers' dominant defense. Aiding their offense was Bastian Korreck who had three aces in a row and also Eric Heller who had six of the thirteen kills for Campbellsville. To wrap up the first set the Tigers went on an 11-4 run and won 25-13.

The Eagles looked to rally back in the second set and tried to even the match. The Tigers had the lead 16-10 and then the Eagles went on 6-1 run bringing themselves within one point. Jakob Zum Kolk had back-to-back kills which stretched Campbellsville's lead. John-Marcos Gonzalez subbed in and had the winning kill. The score was closer this set, but the Tigers seized control and won 25-22. At that point, while Campbellsville had more errors than Midway, the Tigers doubled the number of kills the Eagles had.

Campbellsville brought the energy once again to open the third set in hopes of getting the three-set sweep. The Tigers took an early 10-4 lead with the help of four aces in a row for Gonzales. Campbellsville stayed ahead and went on a 9-1 run to extend their lead to 23-9. Midway would rack up a few more points from Tiger errors, but then Kendall Walter brought the Tigers to match point with a kill. Ho Yin Leung got the final kill of the match and the Tigers won the third set 25-14.

The Tigers shared the ball well but were led in kills by Eric Heller and Zum Kolk with nine each. Following them was Leung with seven and Korreck with six. Campbellsville had a .286 hit percentage compared to Midway's -.036. Also, the Tigers almost quadrupled the number of kills Midway had as Campbellsville finished with 40 and the Eagles finished with 12.

The Tigers will be back in action in the Mid-South Conference Pod with games starting on Friday. For their first game they will face Truett-McConnell University and the match will start at 1:30 p.m. ET in Gosser Gymnasium.
