CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Lady Tigers sought a four-game sweep of the University of Tennessee Firehawks on Sunday afternoon following two wins against the team the day before. Campbellsville was able to run rule Tennessee Southern in game one but came up short in the second contest of the day.
Game one: Campbellsville 18, Tennessee Southern 3
The bats began swinging just after noon as the Firehawks laid out a bunt to reach first. It would be three quick outs for the starting pitcher
Katy Chadwell and the Lady Tigers as the second batter popped a ball up, the runner on first attempted to steal but was caught at second by
Ryley Whitney, and the third came on a foul fly. Campbellsville opened their half inning with a single by
Riley Hurst up the middle. With
Lexi Miller joining Hurst after being brought onto base due to a walk,
Ryley Whitney smacked a ball off the centerfield wall for a double scoring Hurst. From there, the floodgates opened as
Payton Blades' single had Miller hit home plate,
Ryleigh Oldham had a two RBI single, and Hurst came back around for a double scoring one. At its conclusion, the Lady Tigers had seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the first.
The second inning saw UTS score with bases loaded from a hit-by-pitch to get on the board 7-2. Campbellsville wouldn't miss a beat in their opportunities at the plate. After a walk and a single, Oldham hit one to reach first base to fill the bases. With the bags packed,
Keely Bowling was beaned which advance Whitney to home.
Hadlee Carter faced a full count at her at-bat where she was hit pushing third across the plate. Following that, Hurst brought in a run with a single. Miller smacked a two RBI single but a third Lady Tiger stepped on home on a Firehawks error and Miller advanced to second. Whitney would blast a homerun (her eighth of the season) to put Campbellsville up 15-2.
Courtney Patterson came in to relieve Chadwell in the third. Tennessee Southern was able to double to center field but the next batter was out from a great play by Carter who caught a line drive and threw to first just in time. The Firehawks offense was ended when a double play from Hurst to Bowling, then to
Bailey Richardson connected. For their offense in the inning, the Lady Tigers saw Windell land a triple as the centerfielder lost the ball in the sun. It wouldn't be long before the bases were loaded. Hurst busted a ball over second base for an RBI single.
Madison Gregory came in to pinch hit where she landed a single from a Firehawks error which also took another Lady Tiger home to raise the score to 18-2.
Tennessee Southern was quick to get runners on in the top of the fourth inning. A sacrifice bunt pushed Firehawks onto second and third where a hitter grounded out but got a run from her efforts. It was the first quick half-inning for Campbellsville with a caught fly for their first out, a pop-up grab for their second, and a pop-up foul that stayed on the field to end the fourth. In the fifth inning,
Allison Bush came in to cap things off grounding out three batters and ending the game 18-3 via run rule.
Chadwell grabbed the win for her seventh of the season. Hurst and Whitney both led the Lady Tigers with three RBIs and Miller, Blades, and Oldham were just behind with two each. Campbellsville held Tennessee Southern to just six hits while the Lady Tiger offense more than doubled that effort posting 14 of their own.
Game two: Campbellsville 2, Tennessee Southern 7
Karson Williams was the starting pitcher of the second contest. She saw a batter single and then advance on a wild pitch. After a Lady Tiger error, there were Firehawks runners on the corners. A ball hit to the fence on the left line brought in a run before a great catch from Windell on the following at-bat ended the top half of the inning with Firehawks on second and third. In Campbellsville's chance in the frame, Hurst was able to knock a groundball double from a full-count. From there, Miller flied out but moved Hurst to third. Whitney then grounded out but sent Hurst over home for a run, 1-1.
In the top of the second inning, Tennessee Southern claimed a single with their first at-bat. Then, a throwing error sent that runner all the way to third. Luckily for the Lady Tigers, it was three quick outs after that so that the Firehawks couldn't capitalize: a strikeout, a lineout, and a flyout. Windell was walked with four straight balls to begin the bottom of the second. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice led to Windell out at second. With runners on first and second, an in-field pop-up ended things for the Lady Tigers' offense.
The leadoff batter for the Firehawks in the third inning hit a triple to right field. Subsequently, Tennessee Southern saw their next at-bat launch a homerun over the left field fence bringing the score to 3-1 in the Firehawks' favor. Two pop-ups meant two outs before a single down the left field line was wrangled to get a runner out at third. In the Lady Tigers' chance at the inning, Hurst hit a single and then Miller advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Whitney followed suit when she grounded out but brought Hurst to third. Unfortunately, a gentle pop-up would mean Hurst couldn't reach home.
Courtney Patterson relieved Williams before the start of the fourth. An error brought the Firehawks' first batter to base and then they moved to second from a sacrifice bunt. It would be a repeat of events with another bunt pushing the runner to third base. A grounder to first base though ended the Firehawks' offensive. Windell kickstarted the Lady Tigers in their play with a single up the middle.
Sam McKee put an out on the line to advance Windell to second from her sacrifice bunt. A strikeout put two outs on the board for Campbellsville when Windell stole third from passed ball. However, she'd be left stranded after a strikeout.
The fifth inning opened 3-1 with Tennessee Southern still out and ahead and still gathering hits. Their first at-bat saw a single who then moved to second on a wild pitch. An error took another Firehawks batter to first placing runners on the corner bags. Patterson secured her first strikeout of the game for the first out of the inning. It was a groundout for the next at-bat but that sent in a Firehawks runner. A double would then ensure another run for Tennessee Southern before a single pushed that hitter home. Despite the bases full, the Lady Tigers defense ended the top of the inning. Campbellsville's offense couldn't get started though; it was three quick outs and the teams headed into the sixth with Tennessee Southern leading 6-1.
Emily Reynolds came in to throw at the top of the sixth inning and walked the first batter. The first out was recorded from a pop-up fly to right field. A single again placed runners on the corners of the diamond and then a passed ball meant another run for the Firehawks. A flyout and a groundout took the Lady Tigers' defense off the field down 7-1. Looking to storm back, Whitney was walked to reach base. A flyout and a strikeout put McKee up to the plate. A wild throw brought Whitney's pinch runner,
Journey Knowles, to second. From there, McKee smacked a ball right up the middle for an RBI single then stole second when the next batter, Oldham was up to bat. A single for Oldham to the left field line put Campbellsville's runners on the corners.
Madison Davis came in to pinch hit seeking to send in the two on base. With a full-count, Davis was walked loading the bases. A fielder's choice would shut down the opportunity to inch closer to equalizing things.
It was a full-count for the first Firehawks batter in the seventh when they connected for a single. A sacrifice bunt would then move the runner to second. A flyout and groundout would follow for a fast top half of the inning. A pop-up out would be the result of the first at-bat for Campbellsville. Miller singled after that to keep the Lady Tigers' hopes alive. A flyout would put the onus on Blades who hit a lineout to the shortstop ending the game 7-2 in Tennessee Southern's favor.
It was an inverse hit column in the second game as Tennessee Southern doubled the hits of Campbellsville at 12-6. The Lady Tigers' four errors kept them from gaining ground while the Firehawks kept their mistakes to only one.
Next, after the Lady Tigers will take the field at home against Bethel University. That match-up will be a double-header on Tuesday March, 22
nd beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
