Wathen gets 700th win with two double-digit victories over Brescia

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Head coach Shannon Wathen, in her 19th season at the helm, reached 700 total wins as the Lady Tigers handily defeated the Brescia Bearcats twice Tuesday afternoon in a double-header.

Game one: Campbellsville 15, Brescia 5

Riley Hurst had a single to left field to start the bottom of the first. Hurst stole second off of a wild pitch while Lexi Miller was at bat. Miller would get a full count walk just before Ryley Whitney sent Hurst home off of a hit to center field for the first run of the game. With bases loaded after another single by Payton Blades, Windell hit a ground ball down left center field to advance the runners one base and make the score 2-0. Ryleigh Oldham grabbed a two RBI single up the middle to send Windell and Blades home, making the score 4-0. Hadlee Carter would send a ground ball to center right which was caught to end the inning.

Katy Chadwell would end the top of the second in lightning speed with all three Brescia hitters grounding out to center field on the first pitches. During the bottom of the second Miller and Hurst grounded out for the first two outs. Whitney singled to the pitcher and set up Blades who hit a double up center field sending Whitney to third. Windell would ground out to second base to end the second inning.

The top of the third ended in similar fashion to the beginning of the last inning with Chadwell making quick work of Brescia. Oldham started the bottom of the inning with a single to third base. Keely Bowling capitalized on that by sending a single under the third baseman. Hurst would ground out to shortstop putting Bowling to second and Oldham to third, just before the inning ended after Sam McKee grounded out to the pitcher.

Brescia started the top of the fourth hot with a double to left field. The Bearcats got their first run of the game after an RBI single to right field. Brescia then bunted to send a runner into second. After a popped out hit to the pitcher, the Bearcats scored again after a double bat making the score 4-2. Just before the end of the inning, Brescia scored another RBI single with a two-run home run, making the score 4-5. Miller singled up the middle to start the bottom of the fourth but would come up short as they got three other outs quick.

Brescia grounded out three times early in the fifth inning giving the Lady Tigers another chance to take back the lead. Sam McKee began the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field, sending the ball just inches over the second base. Oldham hit a low bunt to advance McKee to second before getting out herself. Journey Knowles pinch hit for Bowling and walked just before Madison Davis sent a three-run homer to left center field to make the score 7-5. Shortly after, Hurst would single to center field, stole second off of a wild pitch, then get sent home after Miller singled to left field. Miller stole second and third after Whitney walked. After a pop ball to right field from Blades, Miller rushed home to make the score 9-5. The inning ended after Windell popped one up to second base.

The Bearcats would not be phased and hit a double to left field at the top of the sixth. They quickly took advantage of that and single to right field advancing their runner to third. The Tigers would leave two stranded on bases though as the Bearcats misplayed some of their running and end the inning. Sam McKee started the bottom of the sixth with a homer to left center field. Bowling and Oldham followed that soon with a single each. Carter singled to right center field and send Oldham home. Hurst would single down center field sending Bowling home and Carter to third. The bases were loaded for Miller as she hit a homer to bring in three runs end the game early, 15-5.

Game two: Campbellsville: 16, Brescia: 6

Karson Williams started on the mound for the Lady Tigers game two. Campbellsville started the first inning by putting on the pressure defensively, ending Brescia's first two hitters at bats quick. The Bearcats singled to left center field just before popping one up to short stop which ended the inning. Riley Hurst would walk to start the bottom of the first. Lexi Miller continued her dominant performance by sending Hurst home with a two-run home run to begin the scoring. Payton Blades and Riley Whitney got out just before Madison Davis sent the ball flying over the left fence for a single home run. The inning ended on the next pitch with the Lady Tigers up 3-0.

Campbellsville's defense was stout against Brescia, not letting them reach first base before the end of the inning. The Lady Tigers would try to put pressure on at the bottom of the second with Ryleigh Oldham singling to short stop then advancing to second after Bailey Richardson walked. Carter, Hurst, and Miller all were out before any results would be put on the scoreboard.

During the top of the third, the Bearcats got some offense going as they had their first hitter walk just before a home run was sent over the back center fence. The Lady Tigers ended their scoring quickly though before heading into the bottom of the third. Blades would double to center field, just before Davis singled down the right field line sending Blades over home plate. Two dropped ball errors after hard hits from Sam Mckee and Oldham got the bases loaded for Bailey Richardson to hit a grand slam after another dropped ball over the fence making the score 8-2. Carter would walk and then advance to second off a wild pitch before Hurst sent a laser single straight down center field to get Carter home. Miller tripled soon after to right field sending Hurst home making the score 10-2. Riley Whitney sent one down center field to get Miller home. The bases were soon loaded again by Whitney, Blades, and Davis before McKee hit a pop-up single to first base which was dropped and Whitney capitalized, making the score 12-2 with one out still in the inning. Brescia changed pitchers after this run but it would not help as Oldham snagged a two RBI double to left center field. Immediately after, Richardson grounded out to the left of second base collecting two RBIs in the process. Carter grounded one to second getting Richardson out on fielder's choice just before Hurst grounded to short stop ending the inning 16-2.

Brescia started the fourth with a two-run home run on two outs. The inning wouldn't continue very long as they got their last strike out swinging. Miller singled up the middle to start the bottom of the fourth and was followed by a Kaeleigh Tuck walk. Taylor Windell sent a ground ball to short stop and Miller was out. Madison Gregory walked to first, loading the bases. San McKee would reach first on a fielder's choice and Tuck failed to score on her way to home base. Paityn Pruitt grounded out to first base to end the inning with a score of 16-4.

Brescia would try to not go out without a bang getting runners on second and third after the first hitter struck out swinging. The second out was hit towards left field and caught. Then, the bases were loaded after a Brescia walk. The Bearcats smacked a two-run single and leave a runner on third to try and close the gap on two outs. Williams ended their offense striking out the last hitter ending the game due to run rule, 16-6.

Lexi Miller stood out on the day for the Lady Tigers with two home runs including a grand slam, a triple, five runs, and seven RBI's. Bailey Richardson's performance was noteworthy as well with six RBI's in two at bats. The Lady Tigers played great defense as they did not give Brescia very many opportunities to score in both games.

The Tigers will be back in action this Friday away at Georgetown College for a double-header in Georgetown, KY at 3 P.M. ET.
