BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The third-seeded Campbellsville University men's volleyball team went into the Mid-South Conference Championship facing off against #6 Life University Thursday night after receiving a first-round bye. The Tigers were firing on all cylinders taking the second round showdown in three sets and advancing to the MSC Tournament Quarterfinals.
In set one, Campbellsville attacked first with a swing delivered by
Eric Heller. The Eagles were able to rise above the Tigers' lead and continued leading by one for a couple of back-and-forths. A three-point run was accomplished by the Tigers as they capitalized from Life's service and attack errors. However, the Eagles put up a fight as they accumulated a couple kills to get ahead 8-6. Campbellsville fought valiantly as they earned their largest lead of five points when
Niklas Held collected a kill. Both teams traded the serve, but Campbellsville took set one 25-16.
Jason Camacho and Heller both netted a hitting percentage of .600 with three kills in the set.
The Tigers began set two 2-5 with three kills from Held and one from Heller. The Eagles then acquired a quick five points that included four errors from Campbellsville. Camacho's back-to-back kills tied up the set at 11. The Eagles evened the match again at 14, but the Tigers answered with another even score at 16 as
Ho Yin Leung banged home a kill. Campbellsville got ahead 20-16 from Life's errors accompanied with a spike from
Bastian Korreck. The Eagle's errors tallied up until the Tigers finally took set two 25-18. Heller continued to improve his swing climbing to a .667 hitting percentage, and Leung gathered four kills too.
Set three started with kills provided by
Ryan Smith and Leung. Life was only able to acquire four points, suffering a two-point deficit before Campbellsville turned up the heat. The Tigers earned seven-straight points with kills from Korreck, Camacho, and Smith. A service error on behalf of Campbellsville gave the Eagles the serve, but Leung ended their turn abruptly with a kill in the opposing court. The Tigers had their largest lead of the match by holding Life to a 13-point discrepancy. As the score stood 22-7, the Eagles trudged their way into double-digit scoring from the Tigers' mistakes. However, the set would end shortly thereafter to the tune of 25-12. Campbellsville swept the Eagles in a 3-0 win.
The Tigers amassed 39 kills over three sets compared to the 17 that Life mustered. Campbellsville swung at a .284 which stood above the Eagles' -.055 hitting percentage. Campbellsville worked as a team as they collected a total of 34 assists (26 were Smith's) whereas the Eagles fell short with 16. Leung and Camacho both finished the evening with nine kills. Heller and Korreck followed suit with six kills each.
The Tigers will continue on their trek toward the Mid-South Conference Championship title. Campbellsville will compete against the second-seeded Webber International Warriors Friday night beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
