Tigers sweep RedStorm behind Van Houten's 13 kills

RIO GRANDE, Ohio. – The (RV) Tigers were on the road Friday night and faced the University of Rio Grande RedStorm. The Tigers secured the three-set sweep and earned their ninth win of the season.

The first set started with Rio Grande going on a 5-1 run to set the tone against the Tigers. Clearly they came out to make a statement. However, it wouldn't be long before Campbellsville rallied and then found themselves within one point eventually taking the lead. The set remained close as it continued on and the Tigers battled to keep the lead. The Tigers scored five straight points to finish out the set and win it 25-18. Bastiaan Van Houten led the team with five kills and Erik Malek had four aces. The team had a total of 11 kills and five errors in the set. If they cleaned up their mistakes, it seemed the Tigers had a firm grip on the control of the match.

At the start of the second set, the Tigers took a quick lead which was a significant departure from the first frame. The team then succumbed to some errors which allowed Rio Grande to tie up the score and gained the lead. The Tigers never could put away the RedStorm in score until the end. Ultimately, the second set wrapped up with Campbellsville winning the set 25-20. Van Houten continued to lead Campbellsville accumulating nine kills at that point and Drew Sims supplemented him collecting a total of five kills.

The third set started with a kill from Van Houten which was the first time in the match that the Tigers were on the board first. The Tigers saw their largest lead of the set when they were up 11-6. Rio Grande then rallied back and tied the score up at 14. The Tigers once again went on a bit of a scoring run to take the lead, which they would never again relinquish, and win the match. Damien Cole scored the winning point for the Tigers, 25-20. Campbellsville had 15 kills in that set and only three errors.

The Tigers were led by Van Houten who finished with 13 kills, Mason McKinney was just behind him with seven kills, and Drew Sis had seven kills as well. Campbellsville also had 10 aces in the match compared to Rio Grande's three and 22 digs compared to 12 from the RedStorm. Both teams had 12 attack errors each in the match.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Virginia and face both Bluefield College and Randolph-Macon College. Their first game will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET.
