WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — After rain put a damper on the chance to play a double-header the day before, the (RV) Lady Tigers of Campbellsville finally hit the diamond against the #15 Cumberlands Patriots Sunday afternoon for a huge Mid-South Conference match-up. The Lady Tigers took game one to the tune of 3-2 and won the second as well 6-4.
Game one: Campbellsville 3, Cumberlands 2
The Lady Tigers came out swinging in Williamsburg getting on the board in the first inning when
Ryley Whitney doubled to right center sending
Lexi Miller in for the score. The Patriots' strength on the mound was evident from the get-go as well: two of the three Campbellsville outs in the top of the first were strikeouts. After
Katy Chadwell struck out the Patriots' first batter, the tying run sat on third base after a single, a stolen base, and a throwing error. An RBI single evened the game, but two flies ended the inning before another runner could cross home plate.
The second inning was a defensive back-and-forth with just two hits between the teams. The third frame saw Miller hit a single from a change-up. After Whitney was walked, Miller sprinted home from
Payton Blades' single up the middle.
Taylor Windell used a sacrifice bunt to push runners to second and third but a fly out and a pop up meant the end of Campbellsville's chance to grow their lead past 2-1. Chadwell posted her third strikeout of the game for the first out in the bottom of the third. Then, she threw out a Patriot who smacked a ground ball straight to the circle. It was three up, three down after
Riley Hurst zipped a ground ball to first and brought the contest to inning number four.
Keely Bowling led off for the Lady Tigers in the fourth and knocked a ball through the 5-6 hole.
Journey Knowles came in to pinch run for Bowling who subsequently stole second. Hurst again attacked the 5-6 gap for a single placing runners on the corners. With bases loaded after Miller was hit by a pitch, a Whitney sacrifice fly to deep left field brought Knowles in for a run bringing the score to 3-1. On that same play, a throwing error found the Lady Tigers occupying second and third base. A three-pitch strikeout left those two on. After two quick groundouts, the Patriots were able to get a double down the left field line. However, a jumping grab from
Hadlee Carter ended the next batter's hopes on making it to first.
Campbellsville would have their own 1-2-3 half inning in the top of the fifth. Cumberlands came out with vigor in their chance at bat managing an RBI single. On the back of a ball hit through the left side, a Patriots runner was caught out at home keeping the score at 3-2 in Campbellsville's favor. The sixth inning was blink-and-you'll-miss-it. One Lady Tigers hit by
Ashby Murt was all that made base in the column.
Looking to add to their lead, Campbellsville managed only a single hit in the top of the seventh coming from Whitney. The Lady Tiger defense would have to come up clutch and secure the game, which they did. Despite a Patriots runner advancing to third, the final out was a ground ball to third base.
Three Campbellsville batters had two hits: Miller, Whitney, and Bowling. Whitney led the way with two RBIs. Cumberlands had eight strikeouts between their two pitchers allowing ten hits while Chadwell retired three Patriots and had ten hits against her as well.
Game two: Campbellsville 6, Cumberlands 4
To kick things off for the Lady Tigers in game two, Miller was struck by a pitch but that didn't stop her from stealing second when she got the chance. All it took was a Whitney single down the left field line to advance Miller to third and a Blades double to center field to take Miller home while also pushing Whitney to third base. A
Madison Davis sacrifice fly ended with an RBI as Whitney scored. After
Sam McKee got on base getting hit by a pitch, Murt dropped a single in right field scoring Blades. The top of the first ended 3-0 for Campbellsville.
Karson Williams got the start in the second game for the Lady Tigers and allowed just one hit in the first inning.
Cumberlands would put the clamps on Campbellsville in the second frame grabbing three outs while only walking a batter. Williams would respond in kind with a strikeout of the first Patriot at the plate with a pop up and ground out closing the inning. The defensive streak would continue with great infield play by Cumberlands to set the tone for the third. The Lady Tigers were three up, three down in their chance at the plate. The offensive game would pick up a bit with Cumberlands as they were able to score on a double play by the Lady Tigers.
At the top of the fourth, the score was 3-1 for Campbellsville. The Patriots would pick up their first, second, and third strikeouts of the contest. The Lady Tigers responded in kind with a 1-2-3 half inning of their own. Hurst began the fifth frame with a single up the middle. Miller would follow that up with a bunt and she made it all the way to third on a throwing error bringing Hurst in for a run. It would be a fly out, a pop up, and a ground out for Campbellsville ending their share of the column up 4-1. The first Patriot at bat was struck out by Williams and the next batter made it first through the right side. A fielder's choice on the third batter kept only one Patriot on base at first. Then, the Lady Tigers took a ground out to head to the sixth.
It was three outs for four of the Campbellsville batters in the sixth inning and the same could be said for Cumberlands. In the final frame, the Lady Tigers came out swinging grabbing two hits from their first two batters: Miller and Whitney. A sacrifice bunt brought both into scoring position on second and third. After a strikeout for the second out, Windell came in to pinch hit. A two RBI single would be the result for Windell raising Campbellsville's lead to 6-1 before Cumberlands got their chance for a run. The first two at bat hit a single and a double respectively. The third Patriot at the plate flied out and the next grounded out but scored the runner on third. With two outs, the Lady Tigers faced runners on the corners and a triple sent both home. With a two run lead, the Patriots lined out and the game was over with Campbellsville winning 6-4.
Whitney led the way for the Lady Tigers in game two with two hits while Windell sent home two runners for most RBIs. With runners in scoring position, the Campbellsville batters were 4-9 while Cumberlands was just 1-5. Williams threw 110 pitches for a strike percentage of .655.
The Lady Tigers will next be at Georgetown College on Tuesday to take on the rival Tigers. That double-header will begin at 3 p.m. ET.
