BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers were originally hosting the Union Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon, but the game was changed to away. Nonetheless, Tiger Baseball was firing on all cylinders against Union return home with the win.
The Tigers started the game with a few hits but couldn't convert them to runs.
Kam Robertson was the starting pitcher for the Tigers. Union went on the score three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. In the second inning, the Tigers added another hit but left one on base and didn't score any runs. The Bulldogs then went three up, three down and brought the Tigers back to the plate for the top of the third inning. The third inning went scoreless for both teams.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers scored their first run.
Eddy Arteaga was walked and reached first base.
Sam Fagerness came in to pinch run for Arteaga and advanced to second base on the next at bat when
Logan Verble made it to first on an error.
Alex Castaneda then singled to center field which advanced Fagerness and Verble.
Chad McCann hit a single and an RBI which brought home Fagerness. The next to plate appearances for the Tigers struck out and the Tigers headed to the field with a two-run deficit. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs added another run and took back their three-run lead headed into the fifth frame.
Jacob White started the fifth inning off for CU with a double to right field. He then stole third base and put himself in scoring position. Arteaga was the next Tiger on base after he reached first off an error by Union. Back-to-back wild pitches were thrown and Arteaga advanced to second on the first one and then White scored on the second one as Arteaga advanced to third.
Logan Verble was struck by a pitch and was the third Tiger on base. One out on the board and
Grant McQueary was at the plate where he was walked.
Alex Castaneda then singled and brought Arteaga across home plate. The Tigers left two on base after the third out, but not before they found themselves within one run of the Bulldogs. In the bottom of the fifth inning, DeShawn Welch came into the game to pitch for Campbellsville. Union added another run giving them five total on the game. Welch struck out the last batter for the third out.
The Tigers left one on base in the sixth inning and went scoreless. In the bottom of the inning,
Joseph Ranford came in to pitch for Campbellsville. The last two outs the Tigers got were strikeouts by Ranford. To start the seventh, Arteaga was walked. Verble then singled to center field and Arteaga advanced to third base. McQueary was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded for the Tigers with no outs on the board.
Josiah Clark entered at the plate for Castaneda and was walked which brought Arteaga home. McCann reached first on a fielder's choice and the bases were loaded again for Campbellsville.
Josh Napier, pinch hitting for Uze, singled to right field and McQueary tied up the game after he scored the fifth run for the Tigers. With a tied ball game and one out on the board, the bases were loaded once again as
Jorge Gonzalez approached the plate. He smacked a sacrifice fly out to right field and brought home Clark giving Campbellsville their first lead of the game. White had a two RBI double bringing Uze and McCann home and gave the Tigers a three-run lead. Ranford was still on the mound for the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers defended their three-run lead with the help of Ranford who struck out all three batters.
Campbellsville went three up, three down in the top of the eighth inning. The bottom of the inning began with
Mason Lee coming in to pitch for the Tigers. Union wasn't able to score after leaving one on base and CU went into the last inning with their three-run lead still intact. Fagerness started the ninth inning off by pinch hitting for McCann and doubled to left field. Uze was walked before Gonzalez singled to right field which scored Fagerness and advanced Uze to second who then advanced to third on another error by the Bulldogs. After that play the Tigers had a four-run lead with two runners in scoring position and no outs on the board. White then singled and Uze crossed home plate scoring the tenth Tiger run.
Kale Seitz was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for CU. The Tigers went on to score three more runs before the third out. The bottom of the ninth began with
Jackson Izatt going to the mound to pitch for Campbellsville. Union hit a homerun to give them six runs total, but Campbellsville was able to get their three outs to win the game 13-6.
The Tigers saw five pitchers this game. They combined for 205 pitches and had a .573 strike percentage.
Kam Robertson pitched the first four innings, had four strikeouts, and allowed four runs. DeShawn Welch pitched one inning, had one strikeout, and allowed one run.
Joseph Ranford pitched two innings, had five strikeouts, and allowed no runs.
Mason Lee pitched one inning and allowed no runs.
Jackson Izatt closed the game pitching the last inning and he allowed one run. The Tigers had a huge seventh inning where they scored five runs and took the lead. That inning was the game-changer after Campbellsville was down 3-0 at one point. They then went on to score five runs again in the ninth inning to secure their win.
Campbellsville baseball will be back in action Wednesday night as they host rival Lindsey Wilson College. The game will begin at 6 p.m. ET and will be played at H.I.G. Field.
