CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY. – The Campbellsville Tigers baseball team hosted #25 University of the Cumberlands Saturday afternoon to complete their three-game series with the Patriots. After winning game one on Friday, the Tigers lost in both games against the Patriots to cap off the series.
Game one: Campbellsville 0, Cumberlands 2
The Patriots began the ball game with a lead off single to put a runner on base. The Tigers retired the next three batters to keep the Patriots from sending their runner across the plate. Jorge Gonzalez singled to right center to start the bottom half of the inning for the Tigers. Unfortunately, Jorge Gonzalez was caught in a double play to end the first inning.
Brady Tedesco and the Tigers' defense put away all three of the Patriots' batters to go into the bottom of the second inning. Jacob White singled up the middle for his first hit of the series. Again, the Patriots capitalized and White was caught in a double play. Josiah Clark singled to left center but was caught stealing to go into the third inning. The Patriots led off the third inning with a single to left field. With a runner on second base, the Patriots singled up the middle and sent a runner across the plate for the first run of the ball game.
The Patriots began the fourth inning with a triple to right field. The Patriots sent another runner across the plate to take a two-run advantage over the Tigers. With two outs, Cameron Castaneda reached base off a walk. Josiah Clark singled to right field and advanced Cameron Castaneda to second base. The Tigers could not capitalize with runners on base. Again, Tedesco and the Tigers' defense retired all three of the Patriots' batters in three up, three down fashion to go into the bottom of the fifth inning. Logan Verble came in to pinch hit and reached base via walk. Verble advanced to second on a double play attempt but was left on base.
During the sixth inning, Chad McCann came in to relieve Tedesco on the mound. After two quick outs from the Tigers, the Patriots tripled down the right field line to put a runner in scoring position. The Tigers kept the Patriots from scoring another run to go into the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers were quickly retired in a three up, three down inning from the Patriots.
To begin the seventh inning, the Patriots singled to left center but was left at first. Throughout the bottom half of the inning, Lebron reached base via walk with one out. Kevin Whitaker came in to pinch hit and reached base off a fielder's choice. Whitaker was left on base and the Tigers fell to the Patriots, 2-0.
The Tigers had five total hits with two belonging to Clark. Tedesco and McCann threw a combined total of 108 pitches with a .630 strike percentage.
Game Two: Campbellsville 0, Cumberlands 7
Alexander Salazar made his 2022 season debut and hadn't pitched since March 7th of the 2020 season which was cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic. To begin the ball game, the Patriots lead off batter was given free bases after being hit by a pitch. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, the Patriots scored the first run of the ball game. Another Patriots' batter was hit by a pitch to reach base but the Tigers kept the Patriots from sending more runners across the plate. The Patriots had a one-run lead over the Tigers to go into the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Noah Amenta reached base via walk but was left stranded on base after the final out of the inning.
The Patriots sent another runner in to score after a called balk on Salazar. Through the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers were retired in three up, three down manner. To begin the third inning, Ryan McFarland came in to relieve Salazar at the mound. On a dropped third strike, Lorenzo Gonzalez threw the batter out at first but the Patriots had a runner in scoring position and added another run to the scoreboard. With one runner on base, the Patriots sent a pitch out to right field to send in another run to take a four-run lead over the Tigers. In the bottom of the third inning, Lorenzo Gonzalez doubled to right center and Verble came in to pinch run for him. Unfortunately, Verble was left on base.
The Patriots singled to third base to start the fourth inning. Another Patriots' batter was put on base after being walked. On a wild pitch, the Patriots put a runner in scoring position at third base. With an attempt to catch the runner on first stealing, the Patriots sent yet another runner across the plate. To go into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers trail the Patriots, 5-0. Noah Amenta started things off for the Tigers and singled to right field. White singled through the left side and advanced Amenta to second base. Cameron Castaneda laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Amenta and White up a base into scoring position. The Tigers couldn't capitalize with runners on base to go into the fifth inning.
The Patriots began the sixth inning with a triple to right center. With a runner in scoring position, the Patriots sent in another runner across the plate to take a six-run lead to go into the bottom of the sixth inning. Amenta singled up the middle to reach base. Unfortunately, Amenta was caught in a double play to end the sixth inning.
To begin the seventh inning, Joseph Ranford came to the mound for the Tigers. The Patriots singled to left field. On the attempt to turn the single into a double, Uze made the throw from left field to Clark at second base to get the out. Ranford and the Tigers' defense went into the bottom half of the seventh inning after a three up, three down top half. Clark singled to right field to begin the bottom half of the inning. Whitaker laid down a bunt to reach base and advance Clark to second base. Clark was caught on the force out at third to go into the eighth inning.
The Patriots were given free bases off a walk to begin the eighth inning. The Tigers caught the base runner while trying to steal. With the bases loaded, the Patriots sent another runner across the plate on a passed ball. The Patriots took a seven-run lead over the Tigers. Jorge Gonzalez singled to right field to begin the bottom half of the inning. Jorge Gonzalez was left stranded on base.
Deshawn Welch came in to relieve Ranford on the mound to begin the ninth inning. The Patriots put a runner on base with a one out double to right center. Another Patriot batter found his way on base after a single to the left side. This left runners on the corners for the Patriots. To get out of the top of the inning, the Tigers capitalized on a double play by Jorge Gonzalez, Clark, and Amenta. The Patriots' second baseman made all three outs in the final inning. The Tigers fell to the Patriots, 7-0.
The Tigers had seven total hits with two belonging to Amenta. The Tigers had four different pitchers with a combined total of 140 pitches and a strike percentage of .614.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday in Owensboro, Kentucky to take on Brescia University. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
