Lady Tigers advance past Pikeville and deeper into MSC Tournament

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The #2 seed Campbellsville Lady Tigers took care of business Thursday besting the #11 seed University of Pikeville Bears with two run rule finishes.

Game one: Campbellsville 11, Pikeville 1

The Lady Tigers got things started with a three up, three down defensive show. In their chance at the plate, Campbellsville recorded a single hit (Riley Whitney) but two runs as a couple of Pikeville errors pushed the home runners around the diamond. The Lady Tigers' defense in the second inning was a repeat of the first. Katy Chadwell saw three batters: the first grounded out, the second flied out, and things ended with a caught pop-up. Although the second inning wasn't as fruitful for Campbellsville, they still sent a run home when Ashby Murt slid across home plate after a wild pitch.

It was the third three up, three down in a row for the Pikeville Bears in the top of the third. The Lady Tigers were on a string all afternoon. After hitting a couple balls against the fence, Riley Hurst finally sent one over and brought in two runners (Keely Bowling and Murt) with her. The Bears landed their first hits consecutively in the top of the fourth inning when the first two batters connected. Another single deeper in the frame led to Pikeville posting their one and only run of the contest. Looking to respond, the Lady Tigers had five hits and five runs at the plate. Payton Blades, Taylor Windell, Ryleigh Oldham, and Madison Davis all singled and Murt doubled to the right of center field.

The top of the fifth inning proved to be the final of the game. Hurst's home run placed her as the team leader in RBIs with three and Murt was just behind her with two (though she did lead the Lady Tigers in hits with three). In five frames, Chadwell saw 18 batters and retired two of them while only allowing three hits. She threw a strike in nearly 69% of her attempts.

Game two: Campbellsville 11, Pikeville 3

Karson Williams began on the mound in the second of the doubleheader. Although she walked the leadoff batter, not another Bear would see a base. Counting the opener, the Lady Tigers would make it seven straight frames with a run through three innings in the second game. Campbellsville brought home a run and two hits in the bottom of the first, three runs and two hits in the Lady Tigers' chance at bat in the second frame, and three runs and five hits in the third.

Courtney Patterson had swapped in for Williams at pitcher in the third and didn't miss a beat. She didn't allow a hit in the frame she entered in and kept Pikeville to just one in the fourth inning. The Lady Tigers would see their first chance at bat with no runs in the fourth although they still accumulated two hits behind Windell's and Oldham's singles. The Bears were able to get a few runs on the board in the fifth frame bolstered by a two-RBI homer. Campbellsville answered with two runs and two hits of their own. Payton Blades doubled to send Lexi Miller home and Windell hit an RBI single for Blades herself to score.

To try and end things early, the Lady Tigers defense didn't permit a single hit or run in the sixth inning. Davis kicked off Campbellsville's chance to run rule with a homerun. Then, a Miller double to send Hurst home got the job done. Hurst and Oldham both had three hits to lead the way for the Lady Tigers in the second of the doubleheader. Miller and Whitney each had three RBIs.

The Lady Tigers will now head to Bowling Green, Kentucky where the Mid-South Conference Tournament will continue Thursday, May 5th.
