Lady Tigers begin the 2022 season on Friday at Indiana University Southeast

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 2022-2023 school year will be a new beginning for the program as it welcomes Peyton Johnston to the helm.

Coach Johnston, last year's graduate assistant coach, was promoted to the head coaching position on an interim basis.

The Lady Tigers finished last season with a record of 24-10 and was fourth inside the Mid-South Conference during regular season play. One of the season's highlights was defeating cross town rival, 16th ranked, Lindsey Wilson College in the Gosser Gym three sets to one. "A big high for me last season was defeating Lindsey Wilson at home." "Coach Johnston was a big factor in that win for us that night and I am so excited to have her as our head coach this season," said Cierra Merrick.

Merrick is returning for her sophomore campaign after leading the team in hitting percentage and total kills her freshman year. She is hoping to continue that trend as she continues to build from her Freshman of the Year award last season.

New players coming to the Lady Tigers include outside hitter Mariane Cassiano transferring in from Auburn University for her senior season and libero Andrea Laboy transferring from North Carolina A&T State University for her graduate student season. Laboy's brother, Andres, is a member of the Tigers men's volleyball team. "It is an honor for my family, for the both of us to have an opportunity to play at the same school," said Andrea Laboy. Laboy earned defender of the week honors while playing in the Big South Conference for the Bulldogs of A&T.

Coach Johnston took an opportunity Wednesday evening to split the group up into two and had a simulated match. The one team was dressed in maroon and the other in white. The maroon team consisted of some expected starters as well as assistant coach Manny Panchame.

This year Coach Manny will be assisting both the men's team as well the women's team. The maroon team dominated the simulated match. However, both teams competed very well and there was a lot of good volleyball in the gym. "I am looking forward to see how Cierra continues to grow and to see the contributions of our new recruits this season," said Panchame.

Lady Tigers begins their 2022 campaign on Friday August 26th when they face Indiana University Southeast at 7 p.m. ET.
