LOUISVILLE, KY – A trio of Tigers stole the show this afternoon in Louisville at the Kentucky Collegiate Invitational.
Kilan Macklin returns after suffering a season-ending injury last season in a big way on Saturday. Macklin punched his plane ticket to the NAIA National Championship in March with a meet record, NAIA A Standard, and PR of 7.15 in the long jump. That mark came on his final attempt at the event besting his school record and previous best by 09m.
Matthew Mays came in a close 3rd place in 6.63m.
Gregory Carr was 4th in 6.44m, and
Corey Smith earned 5th overall in 6.25m.
Mays punched his ticket to South Dakota in the triple jump after the long jump. Mays won the triple jump in a meet record of 14.40 which hit NAIA A Standard. That mark was a .30m PR for his career.
Corey Smith was close behind Mays in a 14.27m effort. Smith already punched his ticket to the NAIA Championships this season.
Maikyah Stowe was the next athlete who made a big impact, this time on the track. Stowe finally broke the 50-second barrier in the open 400m run. Stowe had near-even splits in a school record effort of 49.89 and earned the meet record in the process.
Six other Campbellsville athletes followed Stowe in the 400m.
Miah Chatmond placed 2nd in 52.01,
Elijah Moore earned the bronze in 52.15,
Darionta Bell was 4th overall at 53.17,
Noah Rogers placed 5th in 53.41,
Joshua Morris was 7th in 53.74, and
Kobie Neal rounded out the scoring group in 54.00 placing 8th.
Ishan Cooper and
Zahnte' Brown earned scoring places in the top eight in the 60m hurdles. Cooper won the event at the line in 8.81 while Brown finished 7th overall, 1.07 seconds behind in 9.88.
Stowe's successful day continued in the 60m dash. Stowe qualified for finals in the event and earned the bronze with his time of 7.10. In the men's 4x200m relay, Stowe led the relay in a school record and event-winning effort. Stowe was joined by
Jackson Harrell,
Jaron Hamby, and
Noah Rogers in 1:31.27. The previous record was set back in the 16-17 season by Brandon Battle, Paxton Wiley,
Edwin Ford Jr., and Jaron Jackson of 1:32.57.
The sprints continued key placement on the day. Hamby found himself in the bronze medal position in the 200m in 23.14, while Zach Phelps was 6th in the race in 23.65.
On the distance side of the track, five Tigers earned top eight finishes in the mile.
Dakota Brady led the charge with his 4:33.71 in 2nd, just 1.41 seconds off a season-best.
Lukas Smithson was 4th overall in 4:37.75,
Alexander Steen came in 6th in 4:44.15,
Aiden Tucker was 7th at 4:44.78, and
Myles Smithson was 8th in 4:47.54.
Myles moved up position to a runner-up spot in the 3,000m run finishing in 9:40.76. Andrew Evans was able to move up the field in the 3,000m racewalk. Evans took on the event for the first time with a 19:08.02 effort.
The distance crew finished their afternoon in the 600m and 1,000m run. Tucker was 3.22 seconds off the school record in the 600m with a time of 1:25.86, placing 3rd. Steen led a group in the 1,000m run, placing 4th in 2:48.00,
Ben Graf was 6th in 2:52.00, and
Nolan Flispart was 8th in 2:57.32.
The final track event of the day was the 4x400m relay. The relay consisted of distance athletes, with Flispart, M. Smithson, Steen, and Tucker placing 3rd in 3:42.07.
Blake Skaggs and
Cainan Daniels went 1-2 in the pole vault Saturday afternoon. The duo was able to hit a height of 3.15m.
Seth Cartwright closed out the day for Campbellsville in top-eight positioning. Cartwright placed 4th in the shot put with PR throw of 13.97m. He placed 8th in the weight throw with a mark of 11.07m.
The Tigers will now look towards the end of January and early February training before preparing for the NCCAA Indoor National Championships on February 10th and 11th.
