Turnovers hinder Tigers against #6 Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Campbellsville's bid of an upset over a talented Georgetown team came short on Saturday afternoon with turnovers to blame.

Georgetown started with possession, and Campbellsville's defense was locked in. They quickly got the ball to the offense after a three-and-out. After an early completion to Ashton Auker, Jagger Gillis scampered into Georgetown territory on a keeper. Gillis took off on a 15-yard run to the Georgetown 33. After a penalty, Campbellsville converted on a third-and-fifteen with another Auker connection. Coach Jacob Russell dialed up play-action, and Gillis found Jaxon McLendon untouched in the endzone.

#6 Georgetown settled down on their next drive and marched into Campbellsville territory with a well-balanced attack. The drive went 11 plays for 83 yards in three minutes and 20 seconds. The Tigers were deadlocked at seven apiece with 4:31 left in the first quarter.

Campbellsville's offense built off the first drive and was a well-oiled machine. Luke Sheperson rushed for nine yards, and Charles Collins followed suit with a 16-yard sprint. Gillis connected with Andre Siler, moving into Georgetown ground. Campbellsville squared up with a 4th and five from the Georgetown 35. Gillis found Siler for 13 yards, but Georgetown jarred the ball loose and took possession. On the ensuing possession, Georgetown drove 76 yards in under four-and-a-half minutes to take their first lead. With 10:18 left in the first half, it was Georgetown 14, Campbellsville 7.

Gillis completed a 14-yard pass to Collins and a 24-yard connection with Sheperson before throwing an interception. Georgetown returned the pick 24 yards to the Campbellsville 35. After the Campbellsville turnover, Georgetown made quick work again, going 35 yards and finding paydirt. Two plays later, Georgetown picked off another pass and set up a short field inside Campbellsville territory. Georgetown earned a 28-7 lead on a 29-yard pass, the very next play. Both teams ended the half quietly, with Georgetown carrying the 21-point lead.

Gillis was 15-21 at the half for 133 yards and a touchdown. Sheperson led the Tigers receiving with three catches for 42 yards. Seven different Tigers caught a pass in the first half. Campbellsville only rushed the ball ten times. Collins had five, Gillis with four, and Sheperson with one. Campbellsville averaged six yards per play, while Georgetown averaged seven. Ellis Reed led the defensive side with nine total tackles.

Both teams would have a short first drive to kick off the second half's action. On the Georgetown punt, Campbellsville's punt coverage didn't see the ball, and it hit one of the blockers running downfield. Georgetown jumped on it and had another drive start in Campbellsville territory. Five plays later, Georgetown connected on another pass to take a 35-7 lead.

Campbellsville looked to build some momentum, driving to the Georgetown side of the field. A negative play and back-to-back penalties halted the Campbellsville threat. The clock ran out, and the third quarter ended with Georgetown leading 35-7.

The fourth quarter wouldn't change the scoreboard. Each team traded drives but had nothing to show for by the end of the game.

Gillis went 27-37 for 211 yards and a touchdown. Sheperson led the receiving core with seven catches for 88 yards. Siler caught six passes, good enough for 47 yards. Gillis and Collins each had seven rushing attempts. Both combined for 65 yards. Reed built on his halftime stats and ended with 12 tackles. Gunner Hollis, Luke Vassor, Jayden Cray, and Jeremiah Paulding had one sack. Jaylin Mack had the lone interception for the Tiger secondary.
