PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. – The #3 Lady Tigers traveled to go up against the Bears of Shawnee State Thursday night.
Courtney Pritchett scored her 1,000th point, and a big night for
Elizabeth Bertram buoyed the comeback win, 67-61.
The first basket came from Shawnee State. The Lady Tigers saw their first two points of the game two minutes in with a jump shot from
Maddy Boyle. At the midway point of the first quarter, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to take a seven-point lead over Campbellsville. The scoring run ended with a steal from
Courtney Pritchett and a made layup from
Elizabeth Bertram. The Lady Tigers closed out the quarter trailing by five points.
Opening the second quarter, the Bears made two unanswered baskets giving them a nine-point lead. Campbellsville continued to struggle with their field goals and didn't see a made three-point basket, which kept Shawnee State in a comfortable, consistent five-to-seven point lead. With just under three minutes left until halftime, SSU saw their largest game lead at 11 points. Closing out the half, Boyle made the first three-pointer for Campbellsville, and the Lady Tigers trailed 31-23.
At the half, Campbellsville shot only 8.3% from the arc and 21.9% from the field compared to the 25% three-pointers and 40.7% field goals from the Bears. The Lady Tigers were outrebounded 19-14 but had fewer turnovers than the Bears. Going into the third quarter, Campbellsville had
Kaitlynn Wilks leading the way with six points and Boyle with five.
The second half opened with a 9-2 run in just two and a half minutes by the Lady Tigers, which brought them within just one point of the Bears. Coming out of a timeout called by Shawnee State, Wilks kept the run going with back-to-back layups and gave Campbellsville a three-point advantage. At the midway point of the quarter, the Lady Tigers' scoring spree was stopped by an SSU layup. To close the quarter, Shawnee State outscored Campbellsville 10-5, going back ahead.
Campbellsville trailed Shawnee State 43-41 to start the game's final quarter after rallying in the third. Bertram tied up the game again with a layup in the first minute. With five minutes left in the game, the Lady Tigers hit some big shots, including back-to-back threes from Bertram. Campbellsville found themselves up seven points. In the game's final minute,
Bailey Pedigo and Boyle made four free throws and brought the team up 11 points. That was when
Courtney Pritchett found herself at the free throw line, where she went one for two, but that one free throw became her 1,000th point in her Lady Tiger career. She joins a prestigious class of 38 other historic Lady Tigers to accomplish the feat. Campbellsville held firm and closed out the game with a six-point win.
The Lady Tigers struggled with their field goals and three-point shots but had 21 points off the 18 turnovers committed by the Bears and 21 points from the bench compared to the four from the Bears. Shawnee State outrebounded Campbellsville 33-26. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Bertram (a career-high) and Wilks with 19 points each. They were followed by Boyle who finished with ten points.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action Saturday, February 11th. They will face (RV) Pikeville at home in the Powell Athletic Center with the game beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
