CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University baseball team hosted Brescia on Tuesday afternoon at the HIG Baseball field. After a slow start, Campbellsville defeated the Bearcats in via run-rule 11-1.
The first inning was unrewarding for both the Tigers and the Bearcats. In the bottom of the second inning, Grant McQueary placed the Tigers on the bases after being hit by a pitch. Kale Sietz reached first on a fielding error, and McQueary crossed to third base. Samio Uze flew out to centerfield in exchange for an RBI. Lucas Banta followed up with a double to push Sietz to third base. Brescia threw a wild pitch, which Campbellsville capitalized on with another run scored. Noah Amenta put up a strong at-bat as his single to center field led to another Tiger coming across the plate.
The Bearcats did muster up a run in the top of the fourth inning. Campbellsville suffered an error that led to Brescia putting their first batter on base. After a double, the Bearcats sat in scoring position. A single up the middle was all it took for Brescia to tally a run and decrease their trail. The Tigers did not allow any further advancements as the defenders solidified a double play, and Zack Bromstead poised a strikeout.
Campbellsville collected one run off one hit in the latter half of the inning. Banta homered for a solo trot around the bases. After three walks, the bases loaded up with two outs. A Tiger strikeout ended the inning with three runners left stranded. Jackson Izatt stepped onto the mound for Bromstead. Amenta and Chad McCann made a double play. The following two batters returned to the dugout after the Tiger defenders made outs.
The Tigers worked the bases to push the Bearcats down to increase their lead. After three walks, Josiah Clark singled through the left side to bring another two more runs across. On a passed ball, Banta ran in to score again for the Tigers. Amenta drove home the final run of the inning as he singled to left center. However, Campbellsville did not advance further, and the inning closed. The Bearcats attempted to scratch back; however, the Tigers offered no opportunity for them to score.
Campbellsville took one final stance in the batter's box. Josh Napier and James Teets stood on the bases as Clark approached the plate. Clark's ground out led to Napier scoring and Teets making his way over to third base. McCann singled to push Teets home and Amenta into scoring position. Another single loaded the bases when Henry Wright went up to bat. Wright's trot to first after being hit by pitch solidified the Tigers' eleventh run. The Bearcats failed to retaliate and fell to Campbellsville 11-1.
Banta batted 1.000 with one RBI. Amenta finished with a .667 batting average and tallied two RBIs. Clark's batted picked up three RBIs and a .500 average. Campbellsville's mound produced a .700 strike percentage compared to Brescia's .500 percent.
The Tigers reappear Wednesday, March 8th, to compete against Lourdes University. The competition will be at the HIG Baseball field beginning at 3 p.m. E.T.
