Smith hits third best jump in the country, Tigers place 4th at Patriot Relays over the weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The Tigers were in full swing this weekend at the Patriot Relays with a 4th-place overall finish at the meet.

Corey Smith was the highlight of the meet for the Tigers. The sophomore was able to hit a mark of 15.18m on his fifth jump of the day in the triple jump. That mark won the meet, bests the school record by .20m, earned NAIA A Standard, and puts him as the 3rd ranked jumper in the triple jump. Teammate CamRon Hamby placed 3rd overall in the event, with his best jump coming on his sixth attempt at 14.21m.

Kilan Macklin started out the long jump on a hot note. His first two jumps eclipsed the 7.00m mark, with his best coming in his second attempt at 7.19m, and won the event with the mark. Hamby earned his second bronze medal of the day with his mark of 6.90m.

Seth Cartwright got points on the board for the Tigers in the shot put. Cartwright hit an outdoor season best of 13.51m on his fourth attempt of the day, placing 5th overall. Cainain Daniels competed in the decathlon. The decathlon consists of ten events; 100m, 110m hurdles, 400m, 1500m, high jump, long jump, pole vault, hammer throw, discus throw, and shot put. Daniels scored 4468 points overall, just 42 points behind the best score of his career.

The 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams earned silver on bronze this weekend. The 4x100m relay team made of Darionta Bell, Elijah Moore, Campbell Rawlings, and Maikyah Stowe were able to finish in 3rd overall at 41.80, just .05 off qualifying for the national championship. In the 4x400m relay, Moore, Stowe, Zachary Phelps, and Miah Chatmond were second in the relay at 3:21.18.

Moore and Phelps led the way in the sprints for Campbellsville. Moore placed 5th in the 100m running a time of 10.88. Phelps ran a PR in the 400m with his best time of 50.55, placing 7th, earning two points.

The hurdle crew gave the Tigers 13 more points to their score this weekend. Ishan Cooper led the way for Campbellsville with his 4th place finish in the 110m hurdles at 15.87. Gregory Carr came in 5th overall in the event at 16.09, while Zahnte' Brown earned the final points placing 8th in 17.74. In the 400m hurdles, Carr ran a PR of 58.29, placing 7th.

The biggest performance of the weekend on the distance side of the track came from Samuel Bennett. The sophomore ran over a one-minute PR in the 10,000m run with a new best time of 32:54.42, placing 8th and earning one point for the team. Shawn Little was just ahead of Bennett at 7th in the event in 32:47.33. Dakota Brady doubled up on the weekend in the 800m and 5,000m. Brady scored points in the 5,000m, placing 7th in 15:45.68.

The final two event scorers came from Fredrick Evans and Nolan Flispart. Evans competed in the 5,000m racewalk, placing 4th in 30:25.60, while Flispart was in the 3,000m steeplechase and placed 8th in 11:36.74.

Campbellsville earned 4th-place overall at the meet this weekend with 81 points. The University of the Cumberlands was runner-up with 130 points, while Lindsey Wilson placed 3rd with 110 points. 

Campbellsville will return to the track on Friday, April 14th, when the team travels to Centre College for the Centre Twilight Invitational. Throwing events begin at 12 p.m. ET while track events begin at 5 p.m. ET on a rolling schedule.
