COLUMBIA, Ky. — After a couple of days off due to weather, the (RV) Campbellsville Tigers returned to the campus of Lindsey Wilson to conclude their Mid-South Conference series.
Noah Amenta (the team's batter with the highest hitting percentage at .340) recorded a hit and a run to kick things off, singling to center and then scoring on a wild pitch. The Blue Raiders responded with their own run after a triple sent a runner on second across home plate.
Tied at one entering the second inning, the Tigers struck out twice before grounding out. The first Blue Raider batter hit one over the fence, but two quick outs followed him.
After two quick outs in the beginning of the third,
Alex Castaneda singled, andthen a throwing error in a failed pickoff attempt put him on second. An Amenta double scored Castaneda. Amenta made it to third on a wild pitch, but nothing would come of it. Lindsey Wilson notched three hits and two runs in the third in response.
In the top of the fourth, besides a
Grant McQueary single, the Tigers offense seemed to be slowing down.
Ryan McFarland relieved starting pitcher
Kacey Cheek on the mound and struck out the first batter he saw. The following two hit a pop-up and then a ground out.
The Tigers were in danger of suffering another three up, three down in the top of the fifth frame when Castaneda came through again for another single. That boosted Campbellsville's play as Amenta singled again too. After
Chad McCann was walked, a balk sent all three around to score Castaneda. With two on,
Jorge Gonzalez rode the momentum and hit a double to score both. In their opportunity to answer, Lindsey Wilson evened things up.
Campbellsville was hit with three outs for their first three batters in the top of the sixth.
Aaron Hammer came in to pitch for McFarland when the Tigers sent their defense out. Campbellsville got their first game error and, as a result, faced two Blue Raiders on base. A balk got the first score of the inning, and then a sacrifice fly put Lindsey Wilson up by two.
Mason Lee was brought in from the bullpen, but the Blue Raiders scored again on a single before the seventh inning came around.
Trailing 8-5,
Josiah Clark pinch hit for the Tigers and connected to get on first base. Castaneda was hit by a pitch, and suddenly, Campbellsville was in an advantageous position with no outs. However, the Tigers couldn't capitalize and were suddenly sending their defense back out. Campbellsville held off the Blue Raiders to just a single hit as Lee struck out two batters.
The Tigers were running out of time after a fly-out and two fielder's choices in the top of the eighth. After holding Lindsey Wilson scoreless, Campbellsville had one more shot to take the lead. Following
Samio Uze's walk to first, an error put him on second and Castaneda on first. Amenta's third single of the afternoon loaded the bases. A fielder's choice then scored Uze, and then an error resulted in yet another run, bringing the Tigers within a single score. McQueary struck out with two on to end the game 8-7 in the Blue Raiders' favor.
The Tigers will be found next in Midway, Kentucky, to take on the Eagles Tuesday, April 4th, at 3 p.m. ET.
