MCKENZIE, Tenn. — The Tigers took on the Bethel Wildcats in the first day of their conference series Saturday. Despite their solid defensive efforts in the opener and
Jacob White's three home runs in game two, the Tigers couldn't get the job done, dropping both.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 3, Bethel 5
Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth when Bethel put two runs on the scoreboard. Campbellsville's offense struggled for most of the first game not putting a run up or getting a hit until the sixth frame.
Noah Amenta doubled and then
Chad McCann homered, sending himself, a previously walked
Lucas Banta, and Amenta across the plate to bring the score to just a one run deficit. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, one from a sacrifice fly and then two from their first home run of the game. A
Logan Verble double in the top of the seventh was all Campbellsville could muster, falling 5-3.
The Tigers amassed three hits in the opener. Pitcher
Zane Morrison pitched all six innings, allowing six hits and five runs with six strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 6, Bethel 10
The second game proved slow going for the Tigers yet again, but the same couldn't be said for the Wildcats. Although Campbellsville nearly caught their hit total from the first contest garnering two, Bethel translated their hits to runs in the opening frame quickly taking the 2-0 advantage. In innings three and four, Bethel extended their lead to 9-0 behind six hits, including one that went over the fence for two RBI. The Tigers wouldn't notch another hit until White hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth frame.
There wasn't another run sent home until White homered again in eighth inning. Amenta followed that with a double and a
Lorenzo Gonzalez sacrifice fly cut Bethel's advantage to 9-3. After another Wildcat home run, the Tigers sought to rally in the ninth. In doing so, White had his third home run of the game (the most in his Tiger-career), except this time he took
Kacey Cheek and Alex Casteneda in with him after their were both walked. Still, Campbellsville fell 10-6.
The Tigers doubled their hits compared to game one, getting six led by White's three. Amenta was just behind him with two.
Garrett Maloney (3.1 innings),
Kobe Fredland (1.2), and
Jackson Izatt (3) combined for seven strikeouts. However, Bethel consistently capitalized on Campbellsville's nine errors.
Campbellsville will be back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET for the final game of their away series against Bethel.
