GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Despite winning the regular season series, seventh-seeded Campbellsville University Baseball fell in both Mid-South Conference Opening Round games against the sixth-seed Georgetown Tigers Wednesday afternoon.
The MSC Opening Round is a best-of-three series and each winner advances to Bowling Green Ballpark for the remainder of the conference tournament.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 3, Georgetown 6
Campbellsville was the first to debut their offense, tallying a run in the top of the first inning. Chad McCann doubled to right center to chalk one up on the scoreboard. Then, Jorge Gonzalez collected his first RBI of the afternoon as his single brought McCann across home plate. In the bottom of the frame, Zane Morrison stood on the hill for Campbellsville. After taking down the first opposing batter, a double play made by Noah Amenta held fast the Tigers' lead.
Georgetown nullified Campbellsville's advantage with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to tie things up. The Georgetown Tigers returned in the following frame to tack on additional runs. Four hits were swiftly exchanged for three more runs to knock Campbellsville into a deficit.
The Tigers struggled to put their bat on the ball as Georgetown continued to shove. As Campbellsville stagnated, Georgetown sent two more runs across. Mael Zan broke the Tigers' silence with a home run over the left-field wall. Moments later, Henry Wright cut the Tigers' discrepancy in half with his own trot around the bases after going past the fence.
Campbellsville struggled offensively, however, they threw a .594 strike percentage compared to Georgetown's .561. McCann led the way, completing game one with a .600 at the plate. Jacob White followed up as he finalized a .500 in the batter's box.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 4, Georgetown 8
Georgetown was the first on the scoreboard in the second game after sending in three runs in the first inning. Campbellsville didn't bring anyone home through the second frame as Georgetown managed to score another run.
The Tigers cut into the rival Tigers' four-run lead in the top of the third. Kale Seitz singled to get the inning kicked off. The bases were loaded with Jacob White, Noah Amenta, and Seitz as McCann was up to bat. Seitz came home on a wild pitch scoring the first run and McCann hit an RBI single to bring home White. Campbellsville trailed 4-2.
The Georgetown Tigers added to their lead in the fifth frame as they scored four runs off five hits. Campbellsville answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth with Lorenzo Gonzalez's single and then when White sent McQueary across via fielder's choice. Each team added a few more hits but the runs ceased in the sixth frame and Georgetown took the win, 8-4.
The Tigers racked up ten hits and Georgetown had 12, but Campbellsville could not convert at the rate Georgetown did having only three RBI's to the rival Tigers' eight. In 2023, the Tigers played much better when they were at home (11-7) opposed to away (8-14), as reflected in the error count: Campbellsville had three and Georgetown had none.
