CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The #4 Lady Tigers hosted the Union College Bulldogs for the first game of the season. With four times as many three-point buckets as Union (8-2), Campbellsville opened the season with a victorious home opener, 86-52.
The Bulldogs scored the first basket of the game. However, Bree Gowdy quickly retaliated with a three-point bucket to steal an early lead in the game. Union collected a few baskets, but not enough to counteract Paige Serafini and Gowdy's continuous buckets as the first quarter continued to unfold. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Tigers led the game, 28-16.
Whitney Hay opened the second quarter with a jumper, followed by a layup by Tyra Flowers. Despite the Bulldogs' attempts to catch up with Campbellsville, Talynne Shearer and Dea Bradley's offensive rebounds preserved the Lady Tigers' dominance on the court. Union's missed free throws continued to amplify their deficit on the scoreboard. At the end of the first half, Campbellsville remained in the lead, 53-31.
Flowers scored the first bucket of the second half. Lauren Lee and Hay's opportunities at the charity stripe propelled the Lady Tigers forward on the scoreboard, increasing their advantage to thirty points over the Bulldogs. Ella House came off the bench with another Campbellsville layup. The Lady Tigers' defense limited Union to only two scoring opportunities from the field throughout the third quarter. Going into the final quarter, Campbellsville continued to lead the match, 73-38.
The Lady Tigers capitalized off the Bulldogs' turnovers from the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Union collected their first basket since halfway through the third quarter with only five minutes left until the end of the contest. Bradley scored her first three-pointer aided by Shearer's third assist of the night, increasing Campbellsville's upper hand to forty points ahead of the Bulldogs. The Lady Tigers closed their first game of the season with a victory, 86-52.
