PIKEVILLE, Ky.- The #3 Lady Tigers took the road to battle the University of Pikeville Bears on Monday for their last game of 2024. After regaining the lead in the third quarter, Campbellsville nearly doubled Pikeville with their avid rebounding, taking the victory, 67-58.
Paige Serafini made the Lady Tigers first on the scoreboard with a three-pointer, assisted by Lauren Lee in the opening seconds of the game. Campbellsville got ahead with baskets by Talynne Shearer and Tyra Flowers, but the Bears retaliated and stole the lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Pikeville's shots from beyond the arc extended their advantage over the Lady Tigers. Bradley came off the bench, collecting a few points for Campbellsville at the free-throw line. However, the Lady Tigers' attempts to catch up were not enough after the first quarter of the contest, trailing the Bears, 19-13.
Pikeville came into the second quarter continuing to build their momentum in the paint. Serafini and Flowers did not falter at the sight of trouble and racked up back-to-back baskets to bring Campbellsville closer to the lead. Both teams elevated their defensive efforts, bringing the game to a scoring halt nearing the end of the first half. Despite the Lady Tigers' attempts to bounce back, the Bears still lead after the second quarter, 33-23.
Hallie Allen opened the second half with an avid three-point bucket, setting the pace for Campbellsville to claw their way up the lead. Serafini, Shearer, and Flowers followed with baskets of their own, much too strong for Pikeville to gain control of the ball. Lauren Lee stole the lead from the charity stripe. The Lady Tigers gained their largest upper hand of the match with unrelenting buckets in the paint, holding an 11-point lead over the Bears. Going into the final quarter, Campbellsville led the game, 53-42.
The Lady Tigers' layups in the development of the final quarter continued to extend Campbellsville's lead, leaving Pikeville to trail as the quarter continued to unfold. Although the Bears scored a few points with back-to-back layups, the Lady Tigers maintained a firm hold on the advantage. With only a minute left on the clock, Pikeville came within three points of stealing Campbellsville's lead. Shearer and Lee reopened the gap on the scoreboard, capitalizing off the Bears' fouls and earning a few points for the Lady Tigers at the free-throw line. Campbellsville closed the game with a victory, 67-58.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action, hosting the University of the Cumberlands Patriots on Thursday, January 9th, for their first game of 2025, beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET.
