Tigers win back-to-back NCCAA Indoor Championships, six athletes win national titles

CEDARVILLE, OH – The Tigers claimed their second NCCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship title in a row over the weekend, winning the meet with 197.5 points.

Campbellsville was highlighted by six athletes winning national titles in their events. CamRon Hamby was named the Field Athlete of the Meet. He won the high jump with a new PR and school record of 2.07m, which ties him for 10th in the nation. Track Athlete of the Meet, Isaac Kiprop won the 5,000m run with his time of 15:14.30, 24.33 seconds ahead of his nearest competition.

Zachary Phelps claimed his first title of his career in the 200m. Phelps timed the gun to perfection out of the blocks and gave him the advantage on the backstretch and coming into the finish line in 22.45. Kilan Macklin won his fourth NCCAA crown in the long jump. Macklin shattered his previous school record by .22m in 7.37m on his fifth attempt of the day. That mark puts him at 5th in the nation. 

Corey Smith won the triple jump with a mark of 14.79m, coming in the preliminary round on his third jump of the day. Gregory Carr was the final Tiger to win a title over the weekend. Carr competed in the heptathlon for the first time in his career. He won the event with a school record of 4456 points. Carr is now 20th in the nation with that score.

Campbellsville had several athletes earn NCCAA All-American honors throughout the course of the weekend and key point scorers that led to the team's victory.

20 points came from the 60m alone, with Elijah Moore earning runner-up in 6.88. Moore hit an NAIA B standard and school record in the preliminary round of 6.83. JaQuez Campbell earned the final All-American spot in 3rd, running 6.93. Darionta Bell was 4th in 6.93, and Chance Lucas finished 8th at 7.18. 

Joining Phelps' ten points in the 200m, Maikyah Stowe earned All-American, placing 3rd in 22.70, Bell was 4th in 22.78, and Ishan Cooper earned 6th at 23.06. Myles Smithson gave Campbellsville four points in the mile run with a PR of 4:28.45. Kiprop followed his 5,000m title with a bronze medal finish in the 3,000m run in 8:47.15, which was 3.80 seconds behind the winner. 

12 more points came from the 60m hurdles. Van Thrasher was the first Tiger to place 3rd in 8.22. Thrasher set the school record and earned NAIA A Standard in the prelims with his time of 8.13. Cooper improved upon his national qualifying time in the prelims in 8.16, earning NAIA A Standard, and finished 4th in the finals at 8.24. 

Relays produced 24 points alone over the weekend. In the 4x200m relay, Phelps, Alexander Boyd, Jr., Stowe, and Jaron Hamby earned All-American honors, placing 3rd in 1:32.95. The 4x400m relay team of Phelps, Boyd, Bell, and Moore ran a time of 3:29.62, placing 3rd. The best relay of the weekend came from the 4x800m relay team. Dakota Brady, Lukas Smithson, Max Weston, and Alexandar Steen placed 2nd overall in 8:12.35. The distance medley relay of L. Smithson, Kannon Cundiff, Steen, and M. Smithson placed 5th at 10:53.99. 

Macklin gave himself another event to compete at in the national championship. He placed 3rd in the high jump with an NAIA B mark of 2.02m. Thrasher placed 5th in the high jump with a height of 1.92m, and Zachary Mason was 6th with a height of 1.92m. 

Jackson Hollinsworth broke his own school record in the pole vault, hitting a height of 4.25m on his third attempt of the day, placing 5th. That mark breaks his record by .31m. C. Hamby was the runner-up in the long jump with a mark of 6.83m. Matthew Mays earned the team two points, placing 7th in the long jump at 6.58m. 

In the triple jump, Campbellsville swept the top three spots following Smith's victory in the event. C. Hamby was the runner-up with a mark of 14.15m, and Macklin was 3rd at 14.09m. Mays and J. Hamby rounded out the scoring in the triple jump. Mays was 5th with his mark of 13.37m, and Hamby was 8th with a distance of 12.62m. 

Seth Cartwright was the lone scorer in the throws. Cartwright threw for a distance of 13.76m on his third throw of the day. 

The Tigers coaching staff of head coach Mark Miller, and assistants Anthony Thompson, Corbin Harris, Alexia DeHaven-Boyd, and Chase Bulten earned NCCAA Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year honors. 

Campbellsville will now look ahead towards the end of the indoor season schedule. The Mid-South Conference Championships will be on Friday, February 16th, in Louisville, KY. The NAIA National Championships will be held February 29th-March 2nd in Brookings, S.D.
