COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Campbellsville (RV) Lady Tigers traveled to Columbus, Georgia, to participate in the NFCA Leadoff Classic to open their 2024 season. The Lady Tigers took on Blue Mountain University and Milligan University to begin their three-day campaign. Campbellsville swept day one, winning against Blue Mountain and Milligan.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 17, Blue Mountain 9
Katy Chadwell opened up in the circle for the Lady Tigers to begin the game, retiring the first inning and leaving one Blue Mountain runner stranded. After a first-inning three up and three down, Lindsey Mitchell, in her first at-bat as a Lady Tiger, found herself on base with an off-the-fence double. Taylor Windell followed with an RBI double of her own to score Mitchell. With the help of Kaeleigh Tuck, Windell advanced to third but was left on base to end the top of the second.
To begin the third inning, Emily Reynolds sent a pitch up the middle to reach base, followed by Camille Conkright after being hit by a pitch. Caroline Pitcock scored Reynolds with an RBI single to extend the Lady Tigers' lead over Blue Mountain. Windell turned on an inside pitch, sending it to right field and Conkright across the plate. On a failed attempt to catch Windell stealing, Pitcock scores on the throw down to add the fourth run to the scoreboard. After Selynna Metcalfe was hit by a pitch and Tuck reached via walk, the Lady Tigers loaded the bases for Keely Bowling. Bowling answered with a three-run RBI double to leave the scoreboard at 7-0. Before the final out of the half inning, Reynolds recorded her second hit of the inning to score Tuck and extend Campbellsville's lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the third, Blue Mountain sent a pitch to the left-center fence with two runners on, scoring both to cut into the Lady Tigers' lead, 8-2. An almost identical hit to the same spot sent another Blue Mountain run across the plate. Allison Bush took over for Chadwell in the circle. Before the inning concluded, a two-run homerun for Blue Mountain cut the Lady Tigers' lead to just three runs, 8-5.
To open the top of the fourth inning, Conkright reached base on a walk, followed by Pitcock singling up the middle. With Mitchell's help, Conkright was sent across the plate to one more run to the Lady Tigers' side of the scoreboard. Campbellsville led 9-5 over Blue Mountain to go into the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, two hits from Blue Mountain left runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. After Blue Mountain sent another run across the plate, Reynolds took over in the circle for the Lady Tigers. Blue Mountain added two more runs to their side of the scoreboard on two passed balls, 9-8. Before the final out of the inning was recorded, Blue Mountain tied the game at 9-9.
Tuck and Bowling both reached via walk to start the fifth inning. To leave the bases loaded, Reynolds reached on a bunt. Jessie Daniels was credited with an RBI, scoring Tuck to take back the lead. Morgan Carter came to the plate, reaching base and scoring Bowling to give the Lady Tigers a two-run lead, 11-9.
Pitcock and Mitchell were awarded free bases on walks to begin the sixth inning. Windell sent a pitch up the middle for an RBI single to score Pitcock and leave the scoreboard reading 12-9 in favor of the Lady Tigers. With a bunt, Metcalfe earned bases and sent Mitchell across the plate. Tuck reached base via walk and left the bases loaded. Bowling hit one on the left-field line for a three-run double, advancing Campbellsville's lead to 16-9. Conkright, with a double of her own, scored Bowling. The Lady Tigers led 17-9 to go into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Lady Tigers made the final three outs of the ball game, winning 17-9.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 6, Milligan 1
Daniels opened up the ball game for the Lady Tigers and reached base via walk. Reynolds followed with a stand-up double but was caught in a double play shortly after. Mitchell was also awarded free bases, leaving runners on the corners. Daniels and Mitchell were left stranded to go into the bottom of the first. Courtney Patterson started in the circle for the Lady Tigers in the bottom half. Campbellsville retired the first inning in three up, three down fashion.
Bowling reached via walk to open the second inning of play. Tuck single to right field, Conkright bunt to load the bases. Daniels reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Bowling as the first run of the game. In the bottom half, Campbellsville quickly retired another three up, three down inning for the Lady Tigers.
Pitcock singled to start the top of the third inning. Windell reached on a walk, and Metcalfe reached on fielder's choice, sending Pitcock across the plate. With two runners on base, Bowling singled and scored Windell, giving the Lady Tigers an early three-run lead over Milligan. Patterson and the Lady Tigers retired all three batters in a row to head into the fourth inning.
To begin the fourth inning, the Lady Tigers were put away in three up, three down fashion. Two errors left two Milligan runners on base in the bottom half of the inning. Campbellsville was able to record three outs before Milligan could add any runs to their side of the scoreboard.
Pitcock sent a pitch to right-center to land a triple to lead off the fifth inning of play. With an RBI from Mitchell, Pitcock was sent across the plate. Bowling reached base with a single of her own, leaving runners on the corners for Tuck. Windell added another run to the Lady Tigers' side of the scoreboard with the help of Tuck before the final out of the half inning. In the bottom half of the fifth, Milligan sent their first run across the plate but was unsuccessful in adding any more runs to the scoreboard. The Lady Tigers led over Milligan 5-1 to go into the sixth inning.
Pitcock led off the top of the sixth inning with a double to reach base but was left on base. Ellie Coley took over in the circle to begin the bottom half of the inning. Coley and the Lady Tigers had yet another three up, three down inning to move into the top of the seventh.
To open the top of the seventh inning, Windell reached base on a single. After stealing second and third, Windell scored on a sacrifice bunt from Carter. The Lady Tigers led with a five-run lead over Milligan to head into the bottom of the seventh, 6-1.
The Lady Tiger recorded the final three outs of the ball game, winning 6-1.
Campbellsville will be back in action tomorrow for the second day in Columbus, Georgia. The Lady Tigers will take on Lawrence Tech and College of Coastal Georgia. The games are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET and 5:30 p.m. ET.
