Hamby, Macklin, Smith win jumps titles, Campbellsville finishes runner-up at MSC Indoor Championships

LOUISVILLE, KY – Jumps were the key to the Tigers success on Friday at the Mid-South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

CamRon Hamby, Kilan Macklin, and Corey Smith II earned the Tigers lone victories on the day. Hamby, coming off a PR of 2.07m last weekend in Cedarville, hit a height of 2.02m on his first attempt of the day, placing second at 1.99m. Macklin was .24 ahead of his competition in the long jump, with his best landing at 7.06m. Smith has been consistently in front of the 14.70m mark. He hit a mark of 14.71m on Friday, winning over teammate Matthew Mays.

After his PR last weekend, Elijah Moore was only .01 seconds off, tying that time once again. He earned the silver medal in the 60m finals at 6.84 seconds. In the preliminary round, he ran 6.85 seconds. Zachary Phelps placed 6th in the finals at 6.94, with his best time coming in the prelims of 6.93 seconds. 

Phelps moved up the placement board in the 200m. He ran a PR and school record time of 21.81, placing 2nd overall. Moore was close behind Phelps in 4th place at 21.92. Darionta Bell ran an open 400m PR of 49.90, placing 5th. 

Alexander Steen set an open 800m PR of 1:57.89, hitting a top-five place of 5th. Teammate Lukas Smithson was 3.85 seconds behind in 7th place in 2:01.74. Myles Smithson has begun hitting his stride during his sophomore track season. He placed 6th in the mile run on Friday with a time of 4:31.20. 

Isaac Kiprop comes off a big weekend at the NCCAA Championships last weekend with a 5,000m victory and bronze in the 3,000m. Kiprop placed 7th in the 3,000m run on Friday, hitting an NAIA B standard and school record time of 8:31.45. Aaron Smith was 8th, earning the team one point in the process with a PR of 8:49.36. Smith doubled up on the day with a 7th place finish in the 5,000m run in 16:03.29. 

Andrew Evans punched his ticket to the national championship in the 3,000m racewalk. Evans hit a time of 15:51.21, placing 6th overall. Ishan Cooper, Van Thrasher, and Gregory Carr combined for 18 points in the 60m hurdles. Cooper finished runner-up in 8.21. Thrasher was the bronze medalist in the event in 8.25, with a faster time of 8.18 in the prelims. Carr was 5th in the finals on Friday at 8.55, while his best time of the day came in the prelims as well at 8.51. 

The 4x400m relay was the lone medalist of the relays for the Tigers on Friday. Bell, Phelps, Alexander Boyd, Jr., and Moore running 3:25.81. In the 4x800m relay, Nathanael Turner, Max Weston, L. Smithson, and M. Smithson were able to place 4th in the race in 8:19.48. In the final relay of the afternoon, Campbellsville narrowly missed the podium in 4th place. M. Smithson, L. Smithson, Steen, and Kannon Cundiff ran a time of 10:27.43. 

Macklin and Thrasher joined Hamby in scoring for the high jump. Macklin was 5th overall with a height of 1.91m, while Thrasher also placed 5th at 1.91m. Jackson Hollinsworth set his school record for the second weekend in a row in the pole vault. He hit a height of 4.35m, earning the bronze medal in the process. Cainan Daniels placed top-five in the pole vault, hitting a height at 3.60m. 

Following Macklin's win in the long jump, Raylon Wilson and Thrasher finished in back-to-back positions in the event. Wilson was 6th with his best jump coming in the second attempt at 6.57m, while Thrasher only cleared two jumps with his best mark landing at 6.52m. 

Mays was the silver medalist in the triple jump behind Smith. Mays cleared 14.00m only once on the day, with a mark at 14.19m. Hamby was 5th in the event, with his last two jumps hitting the same mark of 13.63m. 

Seth Cartwright and Jonah Oliver combined for 18 points in both the shot put and weight throw. Cartwright earned the bronze medal in the shot put, with his best throw coming off his last attempt of 13.82m. Oliver was 5th in the shot put at 13.27m. Oliver moved up to the podium in the weight throw, placing 3rd overall at 14.05m. Cartwright placed 7th with a throw of 12.97m.

As a team, the Tigers finished 2nd with 163 team points. The University of the Cumberlands won the meet with 295 points. 

Campbellsville will now prepare for the NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Brookings, S.D. The Tigers will be sending ten athletes across seven events.
