Five homeruns lead Lady Tigers to home-opener sweep over Union

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville Lady Tigers hosted the Union College Bulldogs in a doubleheader match-up on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Tigers sweep the Bulldogs in the home opener, winning both games.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 9, Union 4

The Bulldogs started the first inning with two hits, sending two across the plate. In the bottom half of the first, Emily Reynolds singled to the left side. Caroline Pitcock followed with a single of her own to centerfield, moving Reynolds into scoring position. Lindsey Mitchell sent a pitch to right center to leave the bases loaded. With two outs and a passed ball, Reynolds added the first run to the Lady Tigers' side of the scoreboard and cut the Bulldogs' lead in half. Pitcock and Mitchell were left stranded when the final out of the inning was recorded. 

Katy Chadwell continued in the circle for the Lady Tigers in the second, striking out two to move into the bottom half of the inning. Campbellsville was put away in three up, three down fashion. 

After a quick top inning in the third, Reynolds continued the momentum for the Lady Tigers with a solo homerun over the left-center fence. With one more run added to the Lady Tigers' side of the scoreboard, the game was tied at 2-2. 

To begin the fourth inning, the Bulldogs put a runner on a base with a single to shortstop. In an attempt to steal second, Kaeleigh Tuck threw down to second, getting the final out of the inning and making the attempt unsuccessful. Morgan Carter was hit by a pitch in the bottom half, giving her free bases. An infield error helped Keely Bowling reach base and advance Carter into scoring position. With two runners on base, Tuck sent a pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run homerun. Camille Conkright singled to left center and advanced into scoring position with a stolen base. Conkright was left on base to end the fourth, but not before the Lady Tigers could take a three-run lead, 5-2.

With two runners on base for Union in the top of the fifth, a single down the leftfield line sent another run across the plate. Ellie Coley took over in the circle for Chadwell. A fielder's choice and an infield error helped the Bulldogs add another run to their side of the scoreboard, cutting Campbellsville's lead to just one run. Pitcock singled through the left side to reach base, followed by Mitchell's single to left center. Pitcock stole third base, and Mitchell moved into scoring position. Carter sent a pitch to center field, singling and scoring Pitcock. With Mitchell and Carter in scoring position, Bowling singled through the left side and scored both. Before the final out of the inning, Tuck reached on a fielder's choice but was left stranded. To move into the sixth in of play, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to four runs, 8-4.

Coley and the Lady Tigers put away the Bulldogs in three up, three down style to move into the bottom of the sixth. Reynolds, for the second time in the game, sent a pitch over the center field fence. Mitchell and Windell followed, both reaching on singles up the middle. Carter singled down the leftfield line, advancing Mitchell and Windell into scoring position. The Lady Tigers couldn't send any more runs across the plate before the final out was recorded. 

At the top of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs looked to cut into the Lady Tigers' lead, putting two runners into scoring position, but they couldn't capitalize. The Lady Tigers took game one, 9-4.

Reynolds and Mitchell led the way with three hits each, and Tuck with three RBIs. Chadwell and Coley worked together, striking out ten batters and minimizing the Bulldogs to four runs. Campbellsville led over the Bulldogs with a 1.138 OPS compared to their .644, two stolen bases to their zero, and three homeruns to their zero. 

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 6, Union 3

The Bulldogs began the first inning with two hits and a run. Jessie Daniels opened for the Lady Tigers, reaching base via walk. Unfortunately, she did not reach the plate before the final out was recorded.

To begin the second inning, Union put two runners on base. The bottom of the second passed quickly for the Lady Tigers, being put away in three up, three down style. 

The Bulldogs' top of the third was highlighted by back-to-back home runs, extending their lead to 3-0. They continued their share of the third, loading their bases, but Campbellsville quickly finished their turn with a double play. Daniels opened for the Lady Tigers singling up the middle, although the bottom of the third quickly came to an end. 

With only one runner on base, the top of the fourth quickly ended for Union. Pitcock began the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left center, putting Campbellsville on the scoreboard. Bowling singled to center field, resulting in another run for the Lady Tigers and closing the fourth inning only one run away from catching up with the Bulldogs.

Union put up a couple of hits and filled two bases in their portion of the fifth. Daniels singled up the middle, resulting in another run with Conkright across the plate, tying the score at three. Pitcock continued

Campbellsville's portion of the fifth with another home run to left center, followed by Reynolds running across the plate after stealing second base and advancing to third, stealing the lead from the Bulldogs. On a passed ball, Callie Webb added another run for the Lady Tigers. 

In the opening of the bottom of the sixth, Daniels reached first base on an error and stole second. Shortly after, Reynolds earned a free base. 

The Bulldogs attempted to break Campbellsville's lead in the top of the seventh, but they did not reach any bases.  

Daniels and Reynolds led the Lady Tigers with two hits each, and Pitcock with three RBIs. Courtney Patterson and Coley worked together, striking out five batters and minimizing the Bulldogs to just three runs. Campbellsville led over the Bulldogs with a .976 OPS compared to their .945, three stolen bases to their zero, and tied with two home runs each. 

The Lady Tigers will be back in action, traveling to Williamsburg, Kentucky, for the Iceburg Invitational to go against the University of Rio Grande Red Storm at 11:00 a.m. ET and the Taylor University Trojans at 1:30 p.m. ET.
